The Malaysian government provides education for children from the age of six, with a basic standard in reading and writing already expected. Many children in remote kampungs are unable to reach this standard, meaning they struggle at school. Kampung Sulit Paitan is a small isolated community of around 400 people, located six hours from Kota Kinabalu. Prior to this project, education for the twenty to thirty children within the community took place on an ad hoc basis, with no permanent pre-school building. In the last 10 weeks Raleigh groups have built a kindergarten block from scratch. Teams have laid foundations and floorboards, constructed the walls, roof and fitted doors before decorating inside and out. For this project Raleigh teamed up with PACOS Trust, a community based organisation assisting Malaysian communities. The kindergarten overseen by Sister Dorothy will give children access to an early education, helping them when they reach school. Raleigh would like to thank Les Paquerettes who provided the funding for this project. 4
