Raleigh in Malaysia Raleigh di Malaysia
Raleigh has a long history in Malaysia, first running expeditions in the country in 1987. Since establishing a permanent base in Sabah in
2002, Raleigh has run 19 successful ten-week and five-week long expeditions. In addition, we have run a number of smaller projects.
Worldwide, more than 30,000 people from all nationalities and walks of life have taken part in a Raleigh expedition. We believe there
is an expedition within everyone and we are committed to inspiring people to be all they can be; helping them develop new skills and
friendships and making a difference to communities and environments across the world.
Kami percaya bahawa setiap orang mampu melakukan ekspidisi.
Welcome Selamat Datang
The end of 2009 saw Raleigh celebrate 25 years of running expeditions
across the globe. So what better way to start the decade than with
the largest expedition in Borneo for many years. The positive effect of
Raleigh’s work continues to grow whether it is the communities and
environments that we work in or in ourselves as people. These stories
of success have only been possible by the continued and expanding
support of our project partners, sponsors and suppliers.
Through your hard work, dedication and enthusiasm for this expedition,
you have become a part of Raleigh’s history. I am incredibly proud of the
achievements of this expedition, whether it be providing clean running
water to a village or the personal challenges overcome by each member
of this expedition. Each and every one of you has made this expedition a
huge success. Remember all the lessons you have learnt here and go on
to succeed in everything you want to achieve!
sebuah kampung mendapat sumber air bersih ataupun cabaran
persendirian yang diatasi semasa ekspidisi. Setiap satu peserta ekspidisi
Jim Clements
Country Director Pengarah Negara
I am proud of each and every venturer who has completed this
expedition. They have taken themselves out of their comfort zones to
achieve so much despite various challenges. The volunteer managers
too have put in so much effort to make these expeditions a success. I am
truly proud to be a part of these expeditions, which have in turn inspired
me in so many ways. To all of you, good luck and see you again!
10A marks my sixth expedition as CPM what an amazing experience
it has been! These past months, I have watched the staff and venturers
develop new skills and grow as individuals and team players. I’ve seen
the expedition take on every challenge it faced and succeed. This has
been down to hard work, patience and most of all working as a team and
looking after each other. It has been a great privilege to work with this team
you have my utmost respect and I wish you all the success for the future.
ahli-ahli ekspidisi berjaya mengatasi setiap cabaran. Ini adalah kerana
semangat berkerja kuat, kesabaran dan semangat kerjasama. Saya
amat menghormati setiap satu peserta ekspidisi dan saya mengucapkan
kejayaan yang terbaik untuk masa depan kamu.
Mac McCarthy
Country Programme Manager Pengurus Program Negara
I hope, like me, you have loved every minute of Expedition 10A. I’m
sure at times you have faced challenges and there may even have
been moments you thought you would never get complete. Through
perseverance and with a positive attitude you have been able to
overcome every obstacle and every difficulty and can now look back
with a beaming smile and be proud of all you have achieved.
It has been a pleasure to complete this expedition with each of you and
see all of your hard work first hand when visiting the project sites. I am
confident your many accomplishments will be appreciated and enjoyed
for years to come and you should all be going home knowing you have
made a difference, not only to the people you leave behind but also to
each other.
Saya berharap, seperti saya, kamu telah menyukai setiap detik ekspidisi
Expedition Overview Gambaran Ekspidisi
Expedition 10A was one of the largest Raleigh has run in Sabah in
recent years with 29 volunteer managers and 116 venturers from
around the world.
Between January and April, teams worked on a variety of projects
in the region, including building three gravity water feed systems,
working on the new Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre,
building a community kindergarten, developing infrastructure at
Imbak Canyon and constructing traditional accommodation for a
new rainforest reforestation project in the Kudat region of Borneo.
Participants came from a variety of social and cultural
backgrounds from all over the world, including the Netherlands,
Denmark, Ireland, Malaysia and the UK.
The expedition, supported by the Sabah Ministry of Youth and
Sport, started on Tuesday the 2nd of February and concluded
on Thursday, the 8th of April with an official ceremony including
traditional dancing and food.
Ekspedisi 10A merupakan salah satu ekspidisi yang terbesar
yang pernah dijalankan di Sabah. Ekspidisi ini terdiri daripada 29
pengurus sukarelawan dan 116 peserta sukarelawan dari seluruh
dunia.
termasuk pembinaan tiga sistem air graviti, pembinaan Pusat
Konservasi Beruang Madu Borneo, pembinaan tadika komuniti,
Alpha 1 - Kampung Sulit Paitan
The Malaysian government provides education for children from
the age of six, with a basic standard in reading and writing already
expected. Many children in remote kampungs are unable to reach this
standard, meaning they struggle at school. Kampung Sulit Paitan is
a small isolated community of around 400 people, located six hours
from Kota Kinabalu. Prior to this project, education for the twenty to
thirty children within the community took place on an ad hoc basis,
with no permanent pre-school building.
In the last 10 weeks Raleigh groups have built a kindergarten
block from scratch. Teams have laid foundations and floorboards,
constructed the walls, roof and fitted doors before decorating inside
and out.
For this project Raleigh teamed up with PACOS Trust, a community
based organisation assisting Malaysian communities. The
kindergarten overseen by Sister Dorothy will give children access to an
early education, helping them when they reach school.
Raleigh would like to thank Les Paquerettes who provided the funding
for this project.
GRAV I T Y WAT E R F E E D SIST E M A I R GRAV I T I
Alpha 2 - Kampung Kopuron
Throughout Sabah there are still remote communities without access to
clean, drinkable water. In many villages water is collected in large tanks
and barrels from rainfall or from polluted rivers, meaning local residents
are at risk from poor health. Gravity water feed systems are a simple and
inexpensive way of providing local communities with fresh water.
Kampung Kopuron is in the Telupid district of Sabah, which is four hours
from Kota Kinabalu. Prior to this project, residents suffered from a lack of
water as the community shared its water source with a nearby kampung.
In the village, Raleigh groups installed a new filter system, designed by
Tomher Industries that had never been tried before in Malaysia. The new
system will deliver clean drinking water straight from the tap for the first
time in Sabah. Villagers no longer have to boil water before using it.
Throughout the project Raleigh worked in partnership with Tomher
Industries, who provided the filtration system and PACOS Trust, a
community based voluntary organisation. It is hoped that the success
of this project will allow it to be used as a model for similar projects in
the future. Raleigh is grateful to HSBC who provided the funding for this
project.
Alpha 3 - Kampung Lingka Bugan 2 & Kampung Vunui Lokos
Alpha Three worked on gravity water feed systems in two separate
communities within Sabah, firstly in the Kota Marudu district then in
the Pitas district.
During phase one the team built a new pipe network in Kampung
Lingka Bugan 2, refurbishing the existing system and making sure all of
the community had equal access to water.
In phases two and three the team built an entirely new water system in
Kampung Vunui Lokos, building a dam before planning distribution.
Groups then laid pipes, taking water from the source to stand pipes
close to houses within the community.
During both projects Raleigh worked with closely with The Asian
Forestry Company with technical support from Pacos Trust. Raleigh
would like to thank Coca-Cola who provided the funding for this
project.
Alpha 4 - Sepilok
Groups at Alpha Four took part in work on the new Bornean Sun Bear
Conservation Centre at Sepilok. The sun bear is the smallest of the
nine bear species in the world. Its numbers are decreasing and little is
known about the animal.
Conceived by prominent researcher Wong Siew Te (M.Sc), this is a
unique and exciting conservation initiative. The new centre will raise
awareness and allow for the rehabilitation of captive and orphaned
bears. The project is being overseen by LEAP, who is working very
closely with two Sabah government bodies: the Department of
Forestry and the Department of Wildlife.
Raleigh has made a long term commitment to this project with future
groups committed to construction projects across the centre. During
Expedition 10A, Raleigh groups built a new bridge and boardwalk,
providing access for future visitors to the centre.
During the project, groups visited some of the bears that will be
released into the new centre. Throughout the expedition groups
stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Camp, an eco friendly camp constructed
by volunteers on a previous Raleigh expedition.
Imbak Canyon is one of the last remaining untouched and relatively
unexplored areas of rainforest in Sabah. More people have been to
Everest Base Camp than have visited this primary conservation area.
It is home to wildlife including elephants, orangutans and rare birds.
Imbak’s ecological value means that future conservation is vital.
Previously Raleigh has worked with Yayasan Sabah (a government
institute) to create vital infrastructure for scientists visiting the area.
The building of this infrastructure helped Imbak Canyon achieve Class
1 protection in December 2008, preventing future logging .
Alpha Five has continued this work with Yasasan Sabah, starting on
the foundations for a second suspension bridge offering year round
access to the whole of the protected area. These areas have yet to be
fully explored and this will give scientists access for further research.
Groups have taken full advantage of being in this area, getting up early
to spot gibbons and hornbills. Groups have also taken part in night
treks where they have learned more about this pristine environment.
For many the highlight has been their daily swim under the magnificent
Imbak Waterfall.
Alpha 6 - Kudat
Groups working at Alpha Six have been involved in a new rainforest
reforestation project in the Kudat district.
MORF (Metre Of RainForest) is a new conservation programme
designed to pursue reforestation of rainforest. The organisation
intends to buy and replant areas of land previously used for
agriculture, thereby linking up isolated areas of rainforest and opening
up migration routes for species whose habitat has been reduced by
human activity.
This project has only just begun and Raleigh has been involved right
from the start. Groups have been involved in building accommodation
for future volunteers, a nursery to provide trees and also in collecting
saplings from the local area. This support will go a long way to
rejuvenating the rainforest and protecting the unique biodiversity of
Sabah.
Alpha Six’s living area is right on the beach and groups have taken
full advantage of this beautiful location, swimming every day and
experiencing life with the local community, interacting and working
with local villagers on a daily basis.
menyambungkan pecahan kawasan-kawasan hutan.
PENGEMBARAAN ADVENTURE
PENGEMBARAAN T R E K KI N G
Alphas 7, 8 & 9 - Long Pasia & Crocker Range
daya Sabah, bermula dari Kampung Long Pasia.
All venturers take part in a challenging trek, learning how to support
themselves in one of the harshest environments on earth, THE
JUNGLE.
During expedition 10A groups have taken part in two different treks.
Groups in Alpha Seven and Eight have trekked for 11 to 12 days in the
south western corner of Sabah, starting from the small village of Long
Pasia. This is a very remote area, steeped in tradition and folklore.
Groups have experienced thick jungle and seen some of the richest
plant diversity sites in Borneo.
Groups in Alpha Nine have split their trekking into two different
phases, either side of the dive section. The first 5 day trek took place
in the Kiulu valley in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, where groups
experienced a great mix of jungle, waterfalls and small settlements.
The second 7 day trek took place in the southern part of the Crocker
mountain range, along an old hunter trail to Utan Paradise, a beautiful
camp built by Raleigh venturers on a previous expedition.
A D V E N T U R E PENGEMBARAAN
SCUBA D IVI N G PENYELAMAN SCUBA
Alphas 7, 8 & 9 - Mamutik
As part of the adventure phase, all groups took part in a SCUBA diving
conservation programme run in conjunction with Borneo Divers and
Sabah Parks.
Groups spent four days on Mamutik island, in the Tunku Abdul
Rahman Marine Park, completing their PADI (Professional Association
of Diving Instructors) Open Water Diver or more advanced
qualifications.
Following the course, two days were spent on environmental activities
within the Marine Park. These activities varied from beach and reef
cleanups, reef surveys and coral harvesting for reef rejuvenation.
During the course of the week, the groups have had to endure the
pains and pleasures of living on a tropical island.
