Borneo 09B
February—April 2009
Sabah, Malaysia
Welcome Selamat Datang
For 25 years Raleigh has aimed to provide an environment which enables young
people to recognize and realize their potential, allowing them to test and challenge
themselves beyond their imagination. Expedition 09B has been another incredible
success.
A lifetime’s worth of opportunities have been seized, fears conquered, obstacles
overcome, strength gained and lifelong friendships made. It has been a privilege for
us both to share in these experiences as new skills have been mastered with leadership
and teamwork having become a natural way of life.
None of this would have been possible without the commitment, hard work and
enthusiasm of all those that have taken part. This expedition has also been supported
by a fantastic team of volunteer managers including, project managers,
medics and the support team in fieldbase.
No matter what the role, staff or venturer, every member of this expedition has
learnt something about themselves, and that growth and development begins not
ends with the Raleigh 09B. Remember your achievements for the communities,
incredible people and stunning environment of Sabah, and the impact you have
had on each other. Build on those successes, push yourselves beyond your imagination
and continue to make a difference.
ketahanan mereka melepasi imaginasi. Ekspidisi 09B merupakan satu lagi
kejayaan.
Jim Clements, Country Director Pengarah Negara
Mac McCarthy, Country Programme Manager Pengurus Program Negara
This has been my second expedition as
a volunteer with Raleigh in Borneo and
my first as Deputy Programme Manager.
It has been everything I hoped it would
be. I’ve loved every moment and most of
all getting to know everyone involved. It
has been amazing to be part of a team
where venturers and staff alike have
challenged themselves and each other,
reaping the personal rewards as they go
and making a real difference to the
communities and environment that they
are working in. I hope that everyone
feels as proud as I do about the achievements
of this expedition, what we have
done for each other and for Sabah. It
has been an incredible experience, one
that I will remember forever.
Ekspidisi 09B merupakan ekspidisi saya
yang kedua sebagai sukarelawan dengan
Raleigh di Borneo dan ekspidisi
saya yang pertama sebagai Penolong
Pengurus Program. Ia adalah segalanya
yang saya harapkan. Saya menyukai
setiap detik yang telah berlalu dan lebih
lagi setiap orang yang terlibat dengan
ekspidisi ini. Saya rasa amat terkagum
melihat peserta serta staf mencabar diri
sepenuhnya semasa terlibat dengan
ekspidisi ini sambil bekerja dengan
komuniti tempatan serta berusaha untuk
memperbaiki alam sekitar. Saya berharap
setiap orang yang terlibat berasa
bangga dengan pencapaian mereka
semasa ekspidisi ini, yang telah dilakukan
untuk rakan-rakan seperjuangan
serta Sabah. Ekspidisi ini merupakan
suatu pengalaman yang luar biasa dan
suatu pengalaman yang tidak akan saya
lupakan.
Penolong Pengurus
Program, Ekspidisi 09B
It has been a privilege to be a part of
Expedition 09B, which has been an
exciting and inspiring expedition, no
doubt. Both staff and venturers have
shown incredible enthusiasm and
eagerness to make this expedition one
of the best expeditions yet. I will forever
remember the excited voices and
the delight in the eyes of the venturers
when they recall their experiences on
phase, knowing that this experience
has changed them and will drive them
to make a difference when they get
back out there. I look forward to hearing
of your future achievements that
will have been motivated from your
experience here.
Saya berasa amat bertuah apabila
diberi peluang menjadi sebahagian
dari Ekspidisi 09B yang merupakan
ekspidisi yang seronok dan telah banyak
memberi inspirasi . Staf mahupun
peserta telah menunjukkan semangat
yang tinggi dalam menghasilkan sebuah
ekspidisi yang berjaya. Saya
akan sentiasa mengingati suara dan
air muka peserta yang penuh keseronokkan
apabila menceritakan
kisah mereka semasa ekspedisi. Saya
yakin mereka akan terus memperbaiki
hidup mereka dan dunia sekeliling.
Saya berharap kamu akan terus memberi
maklumat terkini tentang pencapaian
kamu yang diinspirasikan oleh
masa kamu dengan Raleigh.
Raleigh in Malaysia Raleigh Dalam Malaysia
Raleigh in Malaysia
Raleigh first began working in Malaysia in 1987, engaging in a wide range of
exciting and successful projects spanning over a period of more than 20
years. We owe this success in part to the development of strong relationships
with project partners and sponsors that help make our projects possible.
As a personal development organisation, Raleigh’s aim is to offer people,
whether young or old from a range of backgrounds the opportunity to develop
to their full potential. Through our projects, we offer people the chance to gain
an understanding of other cultures, to explore and challenge their own abilities
to make a positive contribution to local and global communities.
Raleigh Dalam Malaysia
Thank you Terima Kasih
We are entirely grateful for the generous financial support of our sponsors
Community Komuniti
Kampung Rugading Gravity Water Feed System
With the majestic Mount Kinabalu in the forefront, the villagers of the stunning Kampung Rugading can now move back into their village after
leaving it five years ago due to an insufficient and unclean water supply. The villagers moved to a village nearby, where the venturers spent some
of their time interacting with the local community and teaching the schoolchildren there English. The Coca Cola Company funded this project as
part of their Clean Water for Communities project.
Penaja projek ini termasuk The
Coca Cola Company, sebagai sebahagian daripada projek Clean Water for Communities mereka.

Kampung Tampasak
Kampung Tampasak Gravity Water Feed System
Situated in the Tongod region, the people of Kampung Tampasak still live in their traditionally built houses made of bamboo and thatched roofs. Subsistence
farming is practiced with hill rice grown on a rotational basis on nearby land and a secondary source of income comes from a small amount of rubber
tapping. There are very few community facilities available and the area has been earmarked for assistance from various NGOs to improve the standard of
living. The Sabah Forestry Department provided the support for this project as part of their community development programme.
mereka.
Environment Alam Sekitar
The Imbak Canyon
The isolation of the Imbak Canyon became its strong point, allowing it to remain as the last untouched and relatively unexplored area of Sabah. Less than
500 people have ever entered this virgin primary jungle area, which is home to wildlife including elephants, orang-utans and hundreds of rare bird species.
Raleigh began work in the Imbak Canyon in 2004, after the Sabah Foundation invited Raleigh to play a role in its decision to preserve this area as a natural
gene bank to help protect future biodiversity of the whole region. Raleigh’s work here includes building infrastructure for the purpose of conservation research
and environmental protection.
Kanyon Imbak

Batu Puteh Eco Lodge
Batu Puteh
For a millennia the indigenous ”Sungai” (River) people of the Lower Kinabatangan River have been living off the rainforest for food, medicine, household
commodities and products of trade. The MESCOT (Model of Ecologically Sustainable Community Tourism) initiative was started in 1996 by a group of
about 30 visionary and dedicated individuals from the different villages of Batu Puteh to create an alternative medium of income generation for the people
of the area, while in the process protecting the last remaining vestige of rainforest and traditional indigenous cultural heritage. Raleigh has been working
with the community since 2002 on a number of projects most recently helping to build an Eco-Lodge Project.
Batu Puteh
Lodge.
Adventure Pengembaraan—Trekking Trek
Trekking in Long Pasia
Long Pasia is steeped in tradition and folklore, the people owning a history of being one of the tribes of Sabah’s ancient head-hunters. Located in the
south-western corner of Sabah on the Kalimantan and Sarawak border, the area is one of the richest plant diversity sites in Borneo in particular for orchids,
rhododendrons and pitcher plants. The trek is across remote and physically challenging terrain. Each group has to be entirely self-sufficient for the
duration of the trek. One of the fantastic rewards that await the trekkers is the sunrise over Maga Falls, but the most talked about feature of the trek is the
friendly leeches!
Pengembaraan Hutan di Long Pasia
Adventure Pengembaraan—Diving Penyelaman
CUBA Diving off Mamutik Island
ll adventure groups will be involved in a SCUBA diving conservation program in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park in partnership with Borneo Divers and
abah Parks. The team will spend 3 to 4 days completing their PADI Open Water diving qualification followed by 1 to 2 days of an underwater clean up, where
hey will collect litter and other waste from selected areas of the marine park. During this time they will live on their very own paradise island from where the
iving is carried out.
