Genre Variations of the Ode and Hymn in Georgian Literature
Summary
In the nineteenth-century Georgian literature, the “ode” and “hymn”
became almost equal to each other like in the European poetry where
“hymn” was mainly the verse of the “ode” form (for instance, Pierre
Ronsar’s “The Hymn to France”).
In the epoch of humanism hymns were differentiated from odes only
for the religious purpose. In Europe a hymn gradually became a poetic
form expressing lofty content. Its specific structure covered the area
beginning with Klopstock’s Odes to Novalis’s hymn prose (“Hymns to
Evening”, 1799).
