For the Genesis of Comic Motives in Mythic World
Summary
In ancient works of folklore we often come across with the motives that
are considered to be comic, as the personages frequently appear in absurd
situations. For instance, the characters of short fairy tales, being lazy, fool
and crazy, sell a stone to a goat; feed river inmates; make frogs knit and
dolls do the housework; give the merchant gold money for the broken piece
of a jug; insult and beat deities (Elias, Christ); the priests and clerks longing
to rape women die in comic situations. Comic motives are also prevalent in
mythological works, where the other upside-down world is presented in
strange colors, what we call a vivid lie; in these works the animals play unusual
roles: the fox is eating the grapes, a pig or a rabbit is cultivating wheat, etc.
If we consider these comic situations on the background of ancient faith
and beliefs, we can observe that each of them is inspired with these beliefs
and is connected to rather serious rituals. We have forgotten the real
meaning and importance of these rituals and that’s why they have now
turned into comic motives for us. These are the rituals connected to stone
and water deities, worshiping ancestor cults, sacrificing wine and oxen,
permanently regenerating nature of mortal and resurrecting deity.
