Contemporary approach and major development trends of
religious writing
Summary
Religious writing is directly linked to the demands and requirements of
church and parish. What is the direction religious writing acquired in the
20th century? What is the current state of religious writing and what are its
major development trends? How well traditional line and contemporary
demands of parish are integrated?
The most vivid change is that hagiographic literature is practically
substituted by biography but certainly it could not ideologically encumber
the function of hagiography.
The main development trends of hymnography are different. This field
revived in the 80’s of the 20th century, when akathist hymns were created.
Therefore, we should apparently notice the trend that while creating a
canon, modern hymnography authors are free in following its structural and
formal (isosyllabic model) equivalent model. Consequently, there is a
considerable number of low-grade works. Hymnography is connected to
literature canon at the same time. Despite current practice to apply to highgrade
public troparions dedicated to saints, they create troparions and book
of liturgy for new saints.
Homiletics is a field that has not been changed significantly. According
to semantic approach, three main directions have been revealed after the
observation of preaching of current Fathers: exegetic, festive and practical
