Rustveli – Poet in the Georgian Folklore Consciousness
Summary
There is no historical and there is rare literal information on the identity
or biography of Rustveli, but there is the complex of the Georgian folklore
texts on the biography of Rustveli. The majority of them were selected and
published during the 20 th century (the editors of the texts: M. Tchikovani, I.
Megrelidze, K. Sikharulidze), only one of them was published in 19 th
century (editor: A. Purtseladze). The texts talk about life and love, youth
and education, relatives and poetical triumph of Rustveli. The central hero
of the texts is the poet and he is the only hero-poet in the Georgian folklore
texts. The source of the narrative are unknown and it is very difficult to say
something about the authenticity of the texts, but we can talk on
mythological structure of the whole text, which can be described as the
Rustveli Myth. The elements of the narrative or the mythologemas of the
Rustveli Myth are: 1. Poet’s Origin; 2. Poet’s Education; 3. Poet’s Return;
4. Poet’s Love; 5. Competition; 6. Poet and Power; 7. Examination; 8.
Poet’s Triumph; 9. Poet in Exile; 10. Poet’s Death. Evidently we can talk
about some different parallel versions of the Rustveli Myth.
