Contemporary Popular Fiction Studies: Gender Approach
Summary
Popular fiction is an integral part of the contemporary literary process.
In literary criticism the negativism towards it is being overcome step by
step, the more objective view on popular fiction to be developed as it is the
component of both literature and popular culture. The gender approach that
is wide-spread in literature theory of the late XX – beginning of the XXI
centuries can be very productive here. A considerable experience of gender
analysis of popular culture and fiction was accumulated in European and
American studies (works by Tania Modleski, Janice Radway, Joan Hermes,
Joan Hollows and others). The gender studies of popular fiction developed
from the feminist analysis of modern media. Four scientific approaches,
after Lana F. Rakow, were formed gradually: studies of “Images and
Representations”, “Recovery and Reappraisal”, “Reception and Experience”
and Cultural Theory. We should study the gender discourse of contemporary
popular fiction that is the way of symbolic organization of the artistic
world in binary oppositions whose parts are associated with male and
female gender. The gender approach towards contemporary popular fiction
makes it possible to describe the ways of femininity and masculinity textual
construction, its connections with different social and cultural practices, to
consider the genre influence upon gender stereotypes reproduction.
