The young characters of the intercultural stories, written in German,
obediently perform religious rites and find ignoring the Islamic way of life
sacrilegious. They try to preserve the mainstay of their identity – Arabic
writing and prayer. However, adult protagonists connect the subject of
religion with erotism, presented as a model of overcoming the strict Turkish
– Muslim dogmas does not aim at eradicating their traditions from their
memories; on the contrary, its purpose is their constructive integration into
the present, both in the eastern and western worlds.
We get acquainted with the literarily dramatized phenomena of the
“Islam” and “alien” on the example of the Turk Alevits, living in Vienna, in
Barbara Prismut’s novel “A Friend’s Writing”. B. Prismut describes the
newly revived tolerant traditions of the Alevit culture, the beauty of the
Islamic calligraphy and the mystic poetry and opposes to this the distrust
and hostile attitude to this Muslim minority of the Austrian police. The
author tries to interpret this alien phenomenon positively and lay a
connecting bridge between the Austrian and Turk Alevits’ cultures.
