Echale had this stone erected. Gopa-gauda's younger bro<strong>the</strong>r Maboja made it.<br />

Obeisance to Kesava and Siva.<br />

Of profound modesty, a Manoja among men, Chagi-maharaja's son, of<br />

unsurpassed fame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, was Dudda-maha(raja) To that lord Duddarasa<br />

and his wife Mechalarasi were born three sons,-Sartthiga-nripa, Chagi-maharaja,<br />

and Dayasimba-nripa. A crest-jewel of <strong>the</strong> Kadamba-vamsa, what words<br />

would suffice to describe <strong>the</strong> unequailed qualities and greatness of Dayasimha-<br />

Deva?<br />

Be it well. Entitled to <strong>the</strong> five big drums, <strong>the</strong> maha-mandalesvara, chief<br />

lord of Banavasi-pura; <strong>in</strong> slay<strong>in</strong>g his enemy Sripala who had an immense<br />

army, a fierce and powerful archer like Parttha; (with numerous epi<strong>the</strong>ts,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g) a sun to <strong>the</strong> Kadamba-kula; his feet surrounded with groups of<br />

women and children, <strong>the</strong> son of Mechala-Devi, a bee at <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of <strong>the</strong><br />

even-eyed (samdmbaha) god Mahadeva; his court resound<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>gled<br />

sound of songs, drums, dances, flutes, and guitars; a critical -exam<strong>in</strong>er of<br />

poems and dramas; on hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sound of his horn <strong>the</strong> wives of his enemies<br />

miscarried; obta<strong>in</strong>er of a boon from <strong>the</strong> goddess Ekkala; a four-faced <strong>in</strong><br />

proficiency <strong>in</strong> logic, grammar, pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, music and many of <strong>the</strong> sixty-four<br />

arts;—Tribhuvanamalla pratapa-Dayasimha-maharaja, may he live for ever.<br />

His fur<strong>the</strong>r praises, say<strong>in</strong>g—Why have ano<strong>the</strong>r Bbarata story? is not k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Dayasimha's history enough?<br />

Praise of his mo<strong>the</strong>r. To <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Banki-Balarita and to Karavati Cheluvoyarasi,<br />

a devotee of <strong>the</strong> lotus-naveled god, was Mechala-Devi born Her<br />

praises. And she had a tank built, named Mechala-samudram. Its praises.<br />

Be it well. (With various praises), Mechala-Devi had a temple made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great Haruva Beluhur agrahara, and sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> god Vasudeva,—for<br />

<strong>the</strong> decorations of that god, <strong>the</strong> worship, daily offer<strong>in</strong>gs, and for <strong>the</strong> Chaitra<br />

and pavitra festivals, she bought certa<strong>in</strong> land (specified) and gave it; also land<br />

under <strong>the</strong> tank rented at one hana, for <strong>the</strong> god.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> daily offer<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> god 4 kolaga of rice is <strong>the</strong> rule. And to <strong>the</strong><br />

charge of <strong>the</strong> Hebhlras and o<strong>the</strong>rs of that village she gave 2 gadyana, from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terest on which, .. hon, to provide 3 kolaga of oil a mouth for <strong>the</strong> perpetual<br />

lamp. And from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest on 2 more gadyana to provide daily 6 areca-nuts<br />

and 15 betel leaves,
