Be it well. (On <strong>the</strong> date specified), Sidapa-gauda granted to <strong>the</strong> Paiichalas<br />

of Basavapattana a sasana as follows: —The customs dues of Basavapattana<br />

are doubled. Imprecation.<br />

Date 1677 A. D.<br />

The rajadhiraja pararaesvara piaudha-pratapa aprati-malla Chikka-Devamaharaja-vadeyarayya,<br />

(on <strong>the</strong> date specified), caused to be written and sent -<br />

to Hampaiyya of Arakalagudu an order as follows: — Whereas <strong>the</strong>r office of<br />

syanabhaga of <strong>the</strong> Arakalagudu ashtavane-sthala has come down, <strong>in</strong>herited<br />

from former times as a royal gift, to Bhaire-Hebharuva's (son) Venkatapati; —<br />

and his deputy (hastaka), Narasappa's son Nanjappa hav<strong>in</strong>g made petition<br />

that it cannot belong to him, that he is not <strong>the</strong> syanabhaga of <strong>the</strong> Arakalagudu<br />

ashtavane-sthala, and that he is a traitor to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g;—And this Venkatapatayya,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to order, hav<strong>in</strong>g stood erect and circumambulated <strong>the</strong> feet of <strong>the</strong><br />

god Arkkesvara, repeat<strong>in</strong>g—"That <strong>the</strong> office of syanabhaga of <strong>the</strong> Arakalagudu<br />

ashtavane-sthala has come down to me, <strong>in</strong>herited from former times as a royal<br />

gift, is true. I am no traitor to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g;" —and <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> god plung<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his hand <strong>in</strong>to ghi boiled as hot as possible, has won:—Therefore, as before,<br />

<strong>the</strong> office of syanabhaga of <strong>the</strong> Arakalagudu ashtavane-sthala, and <strong>the</strong> property<br />

perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to it (specified), we have this day confirmed to Baire-hebharuva's<br />

(son) Venkatapati; and he will <strong>the</strong>refore receive <strong>the</strong> kaditta l) and potstone<br />

from <strong>the</strong> palace, and all <strong>the</strong> accounts of <strong>the</strong> Arakalagudu ashtavane-sthala<br />

will <strong>in</strong> future be written by his hand and obta<strong>in</strong>ed from him.<br />

A copy of this order will be given to <strong>the</strong> syanabhaga's records at <strong>the</strong> palace,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al given to Venkatapati<br />

Date 1677 A. D.<br />

This is a repetition of <strong>the</strong> above, but says that Venkatapati's fa<strong>the</strong>r had<br />

made over his charge to <strong>the</strong> deputy (hastaka) and gone to some o<strong>the</strong>r place,<br />

where he died: (hence no doubt <strong>the</strong> ground for <strong>the</strong> deputy's accusation).<br />

*' The kaditta is a fold<strong>in</strong>g book of cotton cloth, blackened o\er, and is written on with a style<br />

of potstone (balapa). It WAS formerly used for all Government records and acconts, and is still <strong>in</strong><br />

use <strong>in</strong> many native shops and warehouses.
