May it be prosperous. Be it well. (On <strong>the</strong> date specified), when Narasa-<br />

Raja-Vader was rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> peaceful k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> Maisur country. — and<br />

[Do]daiya, son of Chennaviraiya, prabhu of <strong>the</strong> Tungam-sthala <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chennapatna-sime,<br />

was hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> havdh of Anati,— Lakkanaiya and Chandaiya set<br />

up ... for <strong>the</strong> god Somesvara of Anati.<br />

His two feet reverenced by <strong>the</strong> crowns of celestial, serpent, aerial, and<br />

mortal k<strong>in</strong>gs; <strong>the</strong> preserver of <strong>the</strong> gods, to <strong>the</strong> world-renowned k<strong>in</strong>g Soyi-Deva,,<br />

may <strong>the</strong> unfad<strong>in</strong>g form, <strong>the</strong> god Vira-Lakshmi-Narasimha, ever grant un<strong>in</strong>terrupted<br />

festivals.<br />

Usual genealogy of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas, to Narasimha, <strong>the</strong> son of Ballala and<br />

Padmala-madevi. He is said to be a sun to <strong>the</strong> lotus <strong>the</strong> Chola-kula. His<br />

forcible capture of Adiyama, Chera, Pandya, Makara, and <strong>the</strong> powerful Kadavas,<br />

why should I describe? Describe how he lifted up Chdla, brought under his<br />

order <strong>the</strong> land as far as Setu, and pursu<strong>in</strong>g after <strong>the</strong> Tn-Kaliriga k<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

penetrated <strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong> of elephants, display<strong>in</strong>g unequalled valour, — Naiasimha-<br />

Raya. His far<strong>the</strong>r praises. To him and to Kalala-Devi was born Soyi-Deva<br />

or vira-Somesvara-Deva; his praise.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> splendid royal palace of <strong>the</strong> great Nnsimha, chief of <strong>the</strong> karanas<br />

was Visvanatha, an ornament of <strong>the</strong> Brahman race, whose ancestial bit thplace<br />

was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world-renowned Belvola, <strong>in</strong> its chief village Lokkagundi. In it, to <strong>the</strong><br />

Maligeya, of <strong>the</strong> Vasishtha-gotra, Rayarasa, and to Chamavve was bo<strong>in</strong> a son<br />

Isvara-deva, whose wife was Chagale. Their sons were Rayanna and Visvanatha<br />

That Rayanna'8 wife was Muddavve, and to this couple were born Isvata-deva,<br />

G6parasa, Visvanatha, and Dovana,—who <strong>in</strong> course of time became ornaments<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> council of Narasimha. Hav<strong>in</strong>g taught <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Nusimha letters and<br />

accounts, and made him proficient <strong>in</strong> arts, Isvara-deva gamed a position equal<br />

to that of <strong>the</strong> best generals. His junior, Gopanna, <strong>in</strong> display of learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

good qualities, <strong>in</strong> modesty and character was always considered <strong>the</strong> eldei.<br />

The second to him, as if str<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g garlands for Bharatt was his chief pleasure,<br />

could write <strong>the</strong> letters with both hands, and go through a hundred avadhdnas<br />

(or mnemonic feats), so that <strong>the</strong> learned men who exam<strong>in</strong>ed him nodded <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

heads, and even <strong>in</strong>.his games as a boy he showed unusual attention and<br />

diligence, this chief among <strong>the</strong> karanas, Visvanatha. When <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Narasimha<br />

made him <strong>the</strong> chief karanam, as a return for his k<strong>in</strong>dness, he made success<br />

his chief aim, and atta<strong>in</strong>ed to fame.<br />
