Usual account of <strong>the</strong> rise and genealogy of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas, to Ballala's son<br />

Narasimha, who is described as <strong>the</strong> destruction of <strong>the</strong> Magara k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> saviour<br />

of Chola. Obeisance to Siva.<br />

His fame spread to <strong>the</strong> four oceans and his commands were worn as<br />

garlands on <strong>the</strong> heads of all k<strong>in</strong>gs beyond <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> compass, when<br />

raised to <strong>the</strong> throne, he mounted and sat upon it, <strong>the</strong> hundred-fold hero<br />

Narasimha, <strong>the</strong> glory of <strong>the</strong> Yadu-kula, <strong>the</strong> light of <strong>the</strong> Soma-vamsa. A royal<br />

swan <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lotus-pond <strong>the</strong> council of that Narasimha-Deva was Amita-cham<strong>in</strong>atha,<br />

a Hanuma among raya-dandanayakas. He had <strong>the</strong> bravo Ballala as<br />

his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, sprang from <strong>the</strong> pure womb of Padmambika, and his fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was born m <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> famous Kannva, <strong>the</strong> Bharadviija. He had three<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs, — Vamarasa, Lakumarasa and Amaia-dandadhisa, and of those three,<br />

<strong>the</strong> eldtst, Vamaiasa begot <strong>the</strong> son Amita-chamupa<strong>in</strong> His str<strong>in</strong>g of names<br />

was as follows, (a great number of epi<strong>the</strong>ts are given, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g) maha-prachanda-dandanatha,<br />

head-jewel of <strong>the</strong> Vaji-variisa, Boppa's warrior, Hanumanta<br />

<strong>in</strong> pound<strong>in</strong>g heroes, — Amita-chamupa, long may he live. So great was his<br />

liberality that <strong>the</strong> tree of plenty was put to shame and did penance to recover<br />

its reputation; (details given of <strong>the</strong> penance) Praise of his bravery. Amita,<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Narasimha's pound<strong>in</strong>g (peshana) Hanumau, m valour and bounty<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g established his fame from Hima to Setu,— from that fa<strong>the</strong>r his son<br />

acquired <strong>the</strong> renown of valour, — Ballala-dandadhipa. Amita was like <strong>the</strong><br />

discus weapon of Narasimha, and Ballala-deva like its cutt<strong>in</strong>g edge. Far<strong>the</strong>r<br />

praises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same stra<strong>in</strong>, stat<strong>in</strong>g that fa<strong>the</strong>r and son were <strong>the</strong> chief supporters<br />

of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g. And Vfunarasa's son Amita-dandanayaka Hanuraan erected <strong>in</strong><br />

Sivara a temple for all <strong>the</strong> gods such that it seemed as if a creation of Aja,<br />

Han and Hara.<br />

Description of <strong>the</strong> ocean. In <strong>the</strong> earth surrounded by <strong>the</strong> ocean is Janibudvipa,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>iddlo of which is Metu, south of which is <strong>the</strong> pleasant Bharatavarsha.<br />

In it is <strong>the</strong> Kuntala-desa, <strong>in</strong> which, by nature a cow of plenty, is <strong>the</strong><br />

Hoysala-nad; its praises.
