Praise of <strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>a Sasana. Usual account of <strong>the</strong> rise and genealogy of <strong>the</strong><br />

lloysalas to Ballala. Of him it is said—The famous fort of Uchchangi, who<br />

of <strong>the</strong> former k<strong>in</strong>gs that took it, captured it with such a powerful arm as <strong>the</strong><br />

unassisted hero, Samvara-siddhi, Giridurggamalla, Ballala ?<br />

Be it well. When, (with usual titles and epi<strong>the</strong>ts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g) a submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

fire to <strong>the</strong> ocean <strong>the</strong> Tuluva forces, a wild-fire to <strong>the</strong> Pandya-kula, plunderer<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Chola camp (or capital), — with <strong>the</strong>se and all o<strong>the</strong>r titles, <strong>the</strong> pratapalloysala<br />

Ballala-Deva, protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> region of <strong>the</strong> South <strong>in</strong> righteousness, was<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom —<br />

A. dweller at his lotus feet, praised by learned men versed <strong>in</strong> music,<br />

dgamas, logic, grammar, upantshads, purdnas, dramas, and poems; of established<br />

merit; was Chandramauli, <strong>the</strong> ornament of m<strong>in</strong>isters. The rod <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrated<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala's right hand; <strong>the</strong> horizon pervaded by <strong>the</strong> beautiful ris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ocean of his fame white as a stream of milk, frost, crystal, <strong>the</strong> moon, or<br />

jasm<strong>in</strong>; an abode of unlimited merit; praised by all <strong>the</strong> learned without<br />

exception; was this lord <strong>the</strong> councillor Chandiamauli,—were o<strong>the</strong>rs fortunate<br />

as he was fortunate. His wife was Achambike. With eyes of <strong>the</strong> doe, with<br />

lotus mouth, with full hips and breasts, a perfect beauty, with red lips, <strong>the</strong><br />

voice of a cuckoo, sandal breath, a flexible slim waist, with long hair like l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

of bees, <strong>the</strong> gait of a swan, and a shell-like neck,—Achala-devi, a happy wife,<br />

eclipsed all by her beauty. For her family descent: — The good poet, <strong>the</strong><br />

Nayaka with <strong>the</strong> qualities of a tree of paradise, Chandrambike's son Sdvanna-<br />

Nayaka was her fa<strong>the</strong>r, her mo<strong>the</strong>r Bachambike, Devi-dandanayaka her senior<br />

elder bro<strong>the</strong>r. Bamraeya-Nayaka was her junior elder bro<strong>the</strong>r, and Mareya-<br />

Nayaka, her sister Chahyabharasi, Kama-deva her beloved younger bro<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> daughter of <strong>the</strong> world-renowned Sdvanna, Chandramauli be<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

hushand, skilled <strong>in</strong> all arts, what o<strong>the</strong>r wives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world could compare with<br />

Achala-devi? Ano<strong>the</strong>r verso describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> affection of Achala-devi and<br />

Chandramauh<br />

The family of her gurus, of <strong>the</strong> sri-Mula-sangha, Desiya-gana, Pustakagachchha,<br />

and Kondakundanvaya, were (with praises) Gunachandra-siddhantadeva's<br />

son Nayakirtti-siddhanta-dova His disciple was Adhyatmi-Balachandramun<strong>in</strong>dra.<br />

With desire did she cause to be made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Belgola-tirttha <strong>the</strong> temple of<br />

<strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>apati, Parsva-deva, — devoted to <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of Nayakirtti-yog<strong>in</strong>dra's<br />

disciple Balachandra-muni, <strong>the</strong> faithful Achala-devi. And (on <strong>the</strong> date specified)<br />

<strong>the</strong> councillor Chandramauli hav<strong>in</strong>g begged for it to provide Tor <strong>the</strong> worship<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Parsva J<strong>in</strong>esvara temple which his wife <strong>the</strong> deer-eyed Achiyakka had
