That maha-mandalesvara's gurus were as follows: — A promoter of <strong>the</strong><br />

doctr<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> blessed Varddhamana was Kondakunda, head of <strong>the</strong> Mula-sangba.<br />

In his l<strong>in</strong>e was born, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrated DeSika-gana, Devendra-saiddhantadeva,<br />

reverenced by Devemdra. Triumphant is Chaturmmukha-deva, a sun to<br />

<strong>the</strong> lotus garden <strong>the</strong> hearts of yog!svaras, a fierce lion <strong>in</strong> tear<strong>in</strong>g open <strong>the</strong><br />

temples of <strong>the</strong> lusty elephant Mad ana (<strong>the</strong> god of love). His disciple was<br />

Gopanandi, praised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, a sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g jewel-mirror <strong>in</strong> which might be<br />

seen <strong>the</strong> lotus face of Vanf. Triumphant is Gopanandi <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, a moon<br />

to <strong>the</strong> ocean <strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>a creed, bead of <strong>the</strong> Desiya-gana, a sun to <strong>the</strong> groups<br />

of lotus <strong>the</strong> Bhavyas (or Ja<strong>in</strong>s). The celebrated Gdpanandi accomplished<br />

what had been impossible to any one, for he caused <strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>a-dharmma, which<br />

had for a long time been at a stand-still, to prosper through <strong>the</strong> wealth of <strong>the</strong><br />

GaBga k<strong>in</strong>gs of that time. His far<strong>the</strong>r praises, stat<strong>in</strong>g that he was like an<br />

<strong>in</strong>furiated elephant to <strong>the</strong> Sankhya, Bhautika, Bauddha, Vaishnava, and<br />

Charvvaka professors. While Jaim<strong>in</strong>i bolted, Vaiseshika turn<strong>in</strong>g round fled,<br />

Sugata <strong>in</strong>stead of runn<strong>in</strong>g beat his breast, Akshapada with affection came near,<br />

Lokayata attempted to leave, and Sankhya pushed away,—Gopanandi, a lusty<br />

elephant like <strong>the</strong> elephants at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> compass, roamed through <strong>the</strong><br />

paths of <strong>the</strong> six schools of logic.<br />

To <strong>the</strong> thus celebrated Gopanandi-pandita-deva of <strong>the</strong> Kondakundanvaya<br />

of <strong>the</strong> srl-Mula-sangha and Desi-gana, (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), Tribhuvanamalla<br />

Ereyaiiga Poysala rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Ganga-mandala k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom,—<br />

for <strong>the</strong> repairs of <strong>the</strong> basadis of <strong>the</strong> Kabhappu-tirttha of Belgola, for div<strong>in</strong>e<br />

worship, for gifts of food, and for vessels and cloths, made a grant of Rachanahalla<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Belgola Twelve. Usual f<strong>in</strong>al verses.<br />

Praise of <strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>a Sasana. Be it well. (With usual Hoysala titles), was<br />

vira-Vishnuvarddhaua-Deva: to describe his descent;—Here follows <strong>the</strong> usual<br />

genealogy of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas, to Vishnu. Of him it says —The great Kshatriyas<br />

who have displayed <strong>the</strong> pure Kshatriya-dharmma <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world have been four,—<br />

formerly Dilipa, Dasaratha's SOD, and Krishna-Raja; after <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> only one<br />

equal to <strong>the</strong>m is <strong>the</strong> ornament of <strong>the</strong> Yadu-kula, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g vira-Vishnu.<br />

Adiyama ran as if <strong>in</strong> a race, and learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pace Nrisimhavarmma ran,<br />

while Cheng<strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g multiplied upon that pace, <strong>the</strong> proud Kongas learnt it<br />

from Chengiri, and see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> celebrated Kongas, Pandya also ran, —who<br />

would not run before k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu, <strong>the</strong> ornament of <strong>the</strong> Yadus? Thus hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

subdued and sent Adiyama fly<strong>in</strong>g, smitten down <strong>the</strong> lion Nrisimhavarmma <strong>in</strong>
