Obeisance to Ganadlupati When, (with usual titles), <strong>the</strong> pratapa-chakravartti<br />

Hoysala vtra-Ballala-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom: —<br />

A dweller at his lotus feet, a moon risen from <strong>the</strong> ocean of <strong>the</strong> Karnnatavamsa,<br />

purified by constant recitation of <strong>the</strong> Sama-veda, of <strong>the</strong> Harita-gotra,<br />

leverenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of <strong>the</strong> pure Sivacharyya, worshipper of <strong>the</strong> lotus feet<br />

of <strong>the</strong> god Amntesvara, an ornament of <strong>the</strong> race of guius, acharyya of <strong>the</strong> pure<br />

Saiva-santana, a Siva Mahesvara chief, of exceed<strong>in</strong>g merit, — was perggade-<br />

Sankanna. To describe his descent' — In <strong>the</strong> Jambu village of <strong>the</strong> Thousand<br />

bada, a Brihaspati to <strong>the</strong> Sama-veda, of <strong>the</strong> Harita-gotra, was Madhusudana.<br />

His wife was Jakkala-devi, and <strong>the</strong>y had a son Bhaskara. His wife was Malavve,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir son, an ornament to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's m<strong>in</strong>istry for peace and war, was<br />

Kesiraja, (his praise). His wife was Mahadevi, and <strong>the</strong>y had five sons,—<br />

Kamarasa, Bficharasa, Nacharasa, Madhuvanna, and Sankara. (Praises of<br />

<strong>the</strong> last.) In <strong>the</strong> office of a purohita he shone; but why mention this one<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g'' —<strong>in</strong> lucid policy, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes for good poets, <strong>in</strong> cultivated b<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

conversation, <strong>in</strong> judg<strong>in</strong>g precious stones, — ho was a favourite of k<strong>in</strong>g Gmdurggamalla,<br />

— <strong>the</strong> accomplished Saiikara. (Far<strong>the</strong>r praises, say<strong>in</strong>g that) no<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r m<strong>in</strong>isters were equal to <strong>the</strong> perggade-Sankanna. From vtra-Hoysala he<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed (<strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>tment of) <strong>in</strong>spector of <strong>the</strong> servants of <strong>the</strong> porch or terrace<br />

(dehdrad-fdigad-adhyaksha). Sankanna's heggaditi was Malavve, (her praise)<br />

His son was Chandramauh; his son-<strong>in</strong>-law perggade Devaraja, <strong>the</strong> hushand of<br />

Gariga. And this daughter of Sankara constructed a tank.<br />

With wide spread lame, which was like a peimanent comb<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong><br />

(white) lustie of Mnda's body, of pearls, of Indra's elephant, of a smile, of <strong>the</strong><br />

milk ocean, of moonlight, of sandal, of <strong>the</strong> pure starry mounta<strong>in</strong>,—did<br />

porggade-Sankanna sh<strong>in</strong>e, an ocean of good qualities, a bee at <strong>the</strong> lotus feet<br />

of <strong>the</strong> pure Sivachaiyya. He (on <strong>the</strong> date spocified), set up <strong>the</strong> god Chennabankara<br />

<strong>in</strong> Pallava-grama which is Tahrur <strong>in</strong> Nirggunda-nad, and erected<br />

a temple.<br />

To describe <strong>the</strong> glory of that Talirur: — (usual account of <strong>the</strong> gardens<br />

and build<strong>in</strong>gs, and learn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Brahmans <strong>the</strong>re). In this beautiful Pallavagrama<br />

Sankara-deva erected for Chenna-sankara a splendid abode, <strong>the</strong> rays<br />

from <strong>the</strong> p<strong>in</strong>nacle of which surpassed <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow <strong>in</strong> beauty.<br />

And for <strong>the</strong> decorations and illum<strong>in</strong>ations of <strong>the</strong> god, <strong>the</strong> perpetual lamp,<br />

temple repairs, <strong>the</strong> livelihood of <strong>the</strong> pUjari, and gifts of food to <strong>the</strong> ascetics,—<br />

<strong>the</strong> great m<strong>in</strong>ister, <strong>the</strong> senior mane-veggade Chandiamauliyanna, mak<strong>in</strong>g petition<br />

to vira-BallaJa-Deva, (at <strong>the</strong> time specified) obta<strong>in</strong>ed remission of 9 gadyana,<br />

<strong>the</strong> fixed rent of that Talirur; and all <strong>the</strong> Brahmans remitted <strong>the</strong> fixed rent<br />

on <strong>the</strong> land which heggade-Sankanna had left, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> hah.<br />
