Obeisance to Mahadeva. Praise of Sambhu The lustre of Gaun's eyes<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g his moon-light, <strong>the</strong> pei<strong>in</strong>anent moon of <strong>the</strong> terrestrial world, <strong>the</strong> beauti<br />

ful Kunjesvaia, giver of joy, — may he now grant his cont<strong>in</strong>ual coolness to <strong>the</strong><br />

followers of Mahesvara, <strong>the</strong> wearer of <strong>the</strong> matted top-knot, <strong>the</strong> protector of<br />

<strong>the</strong> three worlds<br />

Usual account of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas Sala is said to have sla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tiger with<br />

<strong>the</strong> kwhehuda sele (<strong>the</strong> handle of <strong>the</strong> yogi's fan or whisk), <strong>in</strong>to which ho had<br />

uttered a spell (abhimanttm). Ballala's son Naiasimha is said to have subdued<br />

Choi a, and trodden down <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guished enemies Magara and Kadava.<br />

His son Soma is said to have made <strong>the</strong> Magaia k<strong>in</strong>g roll on <strong>the</strong> giound, to<br />

have struck <strong>the</strong> Kadava k<strong>in</strong>g violently on his face and killed him, to have<br />

plucked up Pandya by <strong>the</strong> root, and to have set up Chola aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> his k<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />

The burdon of <strong>the</strong> earth be<strong>in</strong>g too heavy for o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs, ho took upon himself<br />

<strong>the</strong> burden and relieved <strong>the</strong>m, — such was <strong>the</strong> mercy of <strong>the</strong> Poysala emperor<br />

vira-Somesvara. K<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>n anxiety to discover a place which <strong>the</strong> mighty<br />

arm of Soyi-Deva would not roach and where <strong>the</strong>y might be at ease, took<br />

refuge <strong>in</strong> three k<strong>in</strong>ds of forts, — those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great sea, those <strong>in</strong> dense forest,<br />

or those on a mounta<strong>in</strong>. Asvapati, Gajapati and Narapati could not stand<br />

before him, how <strong>the</strong>n could o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs? That his karapatra (saw) should cut<br />

off <strong>the</strong> heads of hostile k<strong>in</strong>gs is no wonder, but oven his patra (written order)<br />

cut off <strong>the</strong>ir heads.
