Usual account of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas, much offaced, down to Ballala.<br />

Be it well. When, (with usual Chalukya and Hoysala titles), Hoysala vira-<br />

Kallala-Deva, protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole world under his sole umbrella, was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

residence of Huligere, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> earth: —<br />

Dwellers at his lotus feet wore <strong>the</strong> maha-prabhu of Belaguraba, Nagagaunda's<br />

son Bamma-Gaunda, his son Mala-guunda, and his son Bam<strong>in</strong>agaunda,<br />

to describe whose greatness' — <strong>the</strong>y built tanks, <strong>the</strong>y erected temples,<br />

and (<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ways) obta<strong>in</strong>ed great fame. That it might be better (mele) than<br />

Kailasa, and afford pleasure to <strong>the</strong> dweller <strong>in</strong> Kailasa (i.e. Siva), <strong>the</strong>y erected<br />

<strong>the</strong> Melesvara (temple) on <strong>the</strong> application of <strong>the</strong> Meli thousand (<strong>the</strong>ir praise).<br />

Once perform<strong>in</strong>g Siva worship here was as meritorious as perform<strong>in</strong>g worship<br />

a hundred times <strong>in</strong> Kailasa.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> world-renowned (with o<strong>the</strong>r epi<strong>the</strong>ts) Holla-Gavunda and many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs (named) be<strong>in</strong>g present, — (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), for <strong>the</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>the</strong><br />

god Melesvara, and <strong>the</strong> perpetual lamp, — (wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feet of) Bamma-deva,—<br />

son of <strong>the</strong> promoter of <strong>the</strong> Lakulagama-samaya, Nagarasi-pandita, and of<br />

Cholavve, — made a grant of land (specified)<br />

was shaken, on <strong>the</strong> west <strong>the</strong> ocean was covered up, <strong>the</strong> great Chera country<br />

rose up and fled, <strong>the</strong> whole of <strong>the</strong> Pandya k<strong>in</strong>g's territory took refuge <strong>in</strong><br />

forests, enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with fear,—who <strong>the</strong>n can withstand <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great field of battle?<br />

Ilama-Gaunda and Bomma-Gaunda, (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), for <strong>the</strong><br />

offer<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> god Mallikarjuna, and perpetual lamp,—wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feet of<br />

Kesava-jiya, — made a grant of lands (specified).
