<strong>the</strong> Prithivi-Setti of both sects of <strong>the</strong> Nana-De§i of his own country and of<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r countries, seated on <strong>the</strong> diamond throne <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mantapa <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong><br />

Basavesvara temple <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> square <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> streets of <strong>the</strong> sun and<br />

moon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kanthiraya-pete of Banavara situated to <strong>the</strong> south of Srisaila,—<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's m<strong>in</strong>ister Bhaskaranna, <strong>the</strong> chief Salumule of Aiyavale, and <strong>the</strong><br />

maha-nad<strong>in</strong>avaru of <strong>the</strong> 56 countries, — for <strong>the</strong> daily allowance and illum<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> god, as a gift to siva, granted a deed of gift as follows: —For<br />

loads carried or set down, com<strong>in</strong>g by roads east, west, north or south, over<br />

<strong>the</strong> Banavara-slme, to <strong>the</strong> sante (or fair), and loads com<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> pete, for<br />

oach animal that stops, <strong>the</strong> rate of a visa to be given; <strong>the</strong> maha-nadmavaru<br />

of <strong>the</strong> place must give an adda a year for each shop, rates follow for each<br />

bullock of <strong>the</strong> gra<strong>in</strong>-dealers, and of <strong>the</strong> shopkeepers; for each ? gra<strong>in</strong>-shop;<br />

for each shop of <strong>the</strong> goldsmiths and cloth-sellers; for each mill of <strong>the</strong> oilmongers;<br />

for each loom of <strong>the</strong> weavers, bilimagga, devanga, kurubar and<br />

? kabhula; for each pot of <strong>the</strong> washermen; for each shop of <strong>the</strong> tailors; for<br />

each wheel of <strong>the</strong> potters; for each ? kaja of <strong>the</strong> kambh-makers; for each<br />

? vaja of <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>ners, for each varaha of <strong>the</strong> contractors for (betel) leaves; for<br />

each garden of <strong>the</strong> kdraka (? agents), for each fish-shop; for each ? yamna<br />

of <strong>the</strong> road; for each sugar-cane mill; for each lea<strong>the</strong>r-seller's shop; for each<br />

100 of sheep on <strong>the</strong> road, or sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> place; for each male buffalo at salt<br />

pans; for each shop of <strong>the</strong> paiichalas, for each plough of <strong>the</strong> cultivators; —<br />

at <strong>the</strong>se rates, as a gift to Siva, to cont<strong>in</strong>ue as long as sun and moon, etcetera,<br />

did <strong>the</strong>y make a grant to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong> god, that <strong>the</strong>y might<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fame of merit.<br />

Be it well. (On <strong>the</strong> date specified), for <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong> god Tirupati<br />

Venkatachala, <strong>the</strong> herdsmen, camel-drivers and messengers serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Banavar and Javagal kandachar (or military department), caused to be written<br />

and given a b<strong>in</strong>naha-sasana as follows: —<br />

For <strong>the</strong> daily allowance and illum<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> Tirupati temple, we, <strong>the</strong><br />

herdsmen, camel-dnvers, and messengers, of our own free will agree to give<br />

at <strong>the</strong> rate of 1 hana each a year out of our pay, to be cont<strong>in</strong>ued by our<br />

sons, grandsons and posterity. The ? soldiers of <strong>the</strong> Athavane hobali (or<br />

revenue department) will be liable as before to payment for laden oxen,<br />

looms and ? seed-sowers for agriculture. Those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y<br />

newly set up loom, shop, loaded oxen, etcetera, or give up those <strong>the</strong>y had, will<br />

not pay more for <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong> god than <strong>the</strong> one hana granted from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
