fame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north. By Echa-Devi he had three sous, — Ballala, Vishnu and<br />

Udayaditya. Praise of Vishnu . . . Ballala's wife was Uma-Devi, hei<br />

praises. The strong man (ball-ala) k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala erected an abode <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name<br />

of Balla <strong>in</strong> Arasiyakere, to which it was an ornament.<br />

Be it well. When, (with usual titles), <strong>the</strong> pratapa-chakravartti Hoysana<br />

vira-Ballala-Deva was protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> whole earth, putt<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> evil and<br />

uphold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> good, and was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom: — In <strong>the</strong> royal city (or capital, rAjadhdm)<br />

Arasiyakere ho set up <strong>the</strong> god Ballalesvara, and (On <strong>the</strong> date<br />

specified), for <strong>the</strong> daily offer<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> god Ballalesvara, for <strong>the</strong> perpetual<br />

lamp, Chaitra purification, and gifts of food to <strong>the</strong> pujari and servants, —<br />

Hoysana vira-Ballala-Deva, through <strong>the</strong> thousand .and all <strong>the</strong> subjects,—<br />

wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feet of .. pandita of Arasiyakere, made a grant of land<br />

Sivachara, friends of guru, l<strong>in</strong>ga and jangama; devoted to faith <strong>in</strong> Hara and<br />

<strong>the</strong> guru; promoters of all works of merit, wish<strong>in</strong>g stones to dependents;<br />

possessed of <strong>the</strong> unbroken wealth of Lakshmi; equal to Karna <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g away,<br />

to Devendra <strong>in</strong> enjoyment, to Dharmma-Raya <strong>in</strong> patience, to Manmatha <strong>in</strong><br />

beauty; to Arjuna <strong>in</strong> valour; to llanschandra <strong>in</strong> truthfulness, proficient <strong>in</strong><br />

test<strong>in</strong>g diamond, vaiduiya, goracdhika, topaz, emerald, ruby, sapphire, pearl,<br />

coral and o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e gems, if a visa (one-sixteenth) be reduced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

customs and <strong>the</strong>ir merits praised, travell<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> whole country, ornament<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> language; decorat<strong>in</strong>g a thousand bulls of each colour, b<strong>in</strong>drog on<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> mahdghana bell, ty<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> twisted str<strong>in</strong>gs of small bells called<br />

nakshatia (oi <strong>the</strong> constellations), putt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> medals called nava-graha (<strong>the</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>e planets), saddl<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> pad called trthhuvana (<strong>the</strong> three worlds), tighten<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it with <strong>the</strong> girth called maha-iesha (<strong>the</strong> great serpent), and travell<strong>in</strong>g over<br />

<strong>the</strong> 56 countries mak<strong>in</strong>g a great stir like titled nobles, mak<strong>in</strong>g a forest <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

shop, a wood <strong>in</strong>to a city, and pass<strong>in</strong>g co<strong>in</strong>s that are not current; for disputes<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> road, <strong>the</strong>y settle an adda for a hana; for disputes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> street, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

give <strong>in</strong>terest of a bela devoted to <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of <strong>the</strong> gods Ganesvara and<br />

Gauriivara; possessed of a golden Indira temple, with a f<strong>in</strong>ial vase which is a<br />

new absolver of s<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Jambu-dvipa; touchstones for test<strong>in</strong>g justice and<br />

<strong>in</strong>justice; adherents of <strong>the</strong> god Channa-Basavdsvara; equals of Maha-Meru; —
