was <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Narasunha. When he was rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom, — dwellers at his<br />

lotus feet, <strong>the</strong> bhakta-jana (or faithful) of Arasiyakere made deposits for a<br />

permanent fund to provide for <strong>the</strong> perpetual lamp for <strong>the</strong> god Kattamesara<br />

and Balesvara.<br />

Obeisance to Kesava. His two lotus feet <strong>the</strong> birthplace of <strong>the</strong> pure Ganga,<br />

his navel <strong>the</strong> birthplace of Brahma, his broad chest <strong>the</strong> first rest<strong>in</strong>g place of<br />

Sri, — who can far<strong>the</strong>r describe <strong>the</strong> ancient exalted Kesava's glory?<br />

Usual account of <strong>the</strong> rise of <strong>the</strong> Yadu-vamsa, <strong>in</strong> which arose <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Sala.<br />

On his prostrat<strong>in</strong>g himself to a certa<strong>in</strong> holy yog<strong>in</strong>dra, who was s<strong>in</strong>less, versed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge of <strong>in</strong>cantations and without fear, — he, look<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Sala, and th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g with affection 'I will give him empire 1) perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

suitable worship to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> goddess Vasantika of Sasakapura <strong>in</strong>to subjection,—<br />

when, <strong>in</strong> order by any means to break (<strong>the</strong> spell), she sprang forth<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of a tiger, on which <strong>the</strong> yogi exclaim<strong>in</strong>g 'you hit it, Sala' {mm<br />

poy Sala), that bravo warrior unshaken smote it with his cane, — whence <strong>the</strong><br />

name Poysala was acquired by <strong>the</strong> Yadu k<strong>in</strong>gs, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a boon from <strong>the</strong><br />

goddess, and <strong>the</strong> tiger and cane as <strong>the</strong>ir crest. The tiger crest and <strong>the</strong> cane<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir proper emblems, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yadu-vamsa arose many of great fame,<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir courage putt<strong>in</strong>g down a host of hostile k<strong>in</strong>gs. In that l<strong>in</strong>e (omitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

laudations) arose V<strong>in</strong>ayaditya. His offspr<strong>in</strong>g was Erega, whose wife was<br />

Echala-Devi. To <strong>the</strong>m were born Ballala, Vishnu and Udayaditya. The middle<br />

one of <strong>the</strong>se became <strong>the</strong> chief. His son was Narasimha, whose wife was<br />

fiohala-Devi. Their son was vira-Ballala; his praises.<br />

Be it well. When, (with usual titles), Hoysala Ballala-Deva, protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> lands bounded by Hima and Seta, putt<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> evil and uphold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

good, was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> world<br />

<strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom —<br />

Dwellers at his lotus feet, were <strong>the</strong> royal <strong>in</strong>spector heggades and Brahmans<br />

of Arasiyakere, whose greatness was as follows:—The head-jewel of great<br />

m<strong>in</strong>isters, chief of <strong>the</strong> treasury enclosure (bhanddra-vddi), was <strong>the</strong> lord Harihara,<br />

who caused to be erected a temple for <strong>the</strong> lord of Lakshmi. In Arasiyakere,<br />

adorned with a tank like <strong>the</strong> milk ocean <strong>the</strong> source of wealth (or Sri), with<br />

great mums and Brahman Aradhyas, with a pleasure-ground surrounded with<br />

v<strong>in</strong>es of plenty, with betel gardens, with mango and o<strong>the</strong>r trees like trees of<br />

plenty vibrat<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> sound of crickets, with a band of courtesans beautiful<br />
