(On <strong>the</strong> date specified), when <strong>the</strong> pratapa-chakravartti Hoysana vira-<br />

Ballala-Deva was rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> world: — all <strong>the</strong> Brabmans of <strong>the</strong><br />

immemorial agrahara Ballalapura, which is Kittanakeye,— when <strong>the</strong> great<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister Ponnanna's son Kameya-dannayaka was rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Arenekeresthala,<br />

— that Kittanakere-sthala be<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>in</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s, for hav<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> repaired<br />

that Kittauakere, with <strong>the</strong> consent of that Kameya-dannayaka, those Brabmans<br />

and <strong>the</strong> great master of <strong>the</strong> robes, Nacheya-hcggade's sons Nachappa and<br />

Devappa gave to Maleya Rama-Settrs son Kala-Gavuda a sasana as follows: —<br />

Madahalu, a hamlet of Kittanaker.e, we have granted as a rent-free estate,<br />

with all rights perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>reto (specified). We have also granted <strong>the</strong> gauda's<br />

office of Hirivur, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a house <strong>the</strong>re and <strong>the</strong> dues from <strong>the</strong> fair, with<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> land (specified). All o<strong>the</strong>r taxes (specified) will cont<strong>in</strong>ue as usual <strong>in</strong><br />

Hirivur, and that Guhya Kala-Gavuda will pay to those Brabmans as kodagidere<br />

(or tax for <strong>the</strong> rent-free estate) for Hirivur and Madahalu toge<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

9 gadyana a year <strong>in</strong> mukkanddyu (or three <strong>in</strong>stalments). The conditions<br />

He who hav<strong>in</strong>g subdued <strong>the</strong> great Asura, bore up <strong>the</strong> earth on <strong>the</strong> tip of<br />

his tusk, by his glory giv<strong>in</strong>g joy to <strong>the</strong> world, — <strong>the</strong> Varaba (or Boar),—<br />

praised by gods, rishis and all <strong>the</strong> world; through whom <strong>the</strong> world subsists;<br />

<strong>the</strong> lord of <strong>the</strong> world, <strong>the</strong> ancient male, — may he ever grant you protection<br />

Obeisance to Lakshmi Nrisimha He who said, — Behold, brave one, take<br />

a boon, 1 am pleased with your (endurance of) troubles; your love, devotion<br />

and worship of me are unlimited —<strong>the</strong> lord of <strong>the</strong> good who are an ocean of<br />

fame, Lakshmt-Nrisuhha, —as he granted to Prahlada all his desires, so may<br />

that lord ever grant yours.<br />

Here follows an account (badly composed) of <strong>the</strong> rise and genealogy of <strong>the</strong><br />

Hoysalas, down to Ballala, who at <strong>the</strong> sahkrdnti gave to 120 Brahmans who<br />

had heard of his fame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north, and who be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> excellent Karnnatavarnna<br />

were filled with affection, Ballalapura on <strong>the</strong> bank of <strong>the</strong> Tungabhadra,<br />

His son was Narasimha.<br />

Be it well. When, (with usual Chalukya and Hoysala titles), <strong>the</strong> uprooter<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Magara k<strong>in</strong>gdom, <strong>the</strong> establisher of <strong>the</strong> Chola k<strong>in</strong>gdom, Hoysana vira-<br />

Karasimha-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong><br />

peace and wisdom: —<br />
