made a breach of Nangali; subdued Sadah; reduced Budali to ashes;<br />

surrounded and smote Pariyur; uprooted Cherama; took possession of<br />

Kaiichi-pura; put to flight Pandya, went right through Uchchangi, and made<br />

<strong>the</strong> mud stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>du run out, burnt Bellittige, as if burn<strong>in</strong>g Black<br />

bricks; reduced Annigere to little bricks; ground down Bajlare; set fire to<br />

Rajavur; broke <strong>the</strong> legs of Hanungal; besides crush<strong>in</strong>g Banavase, Halasige,<br />

Huhgejje, and Beluvala. His wife was Lakshma-Devi (her praises).<br />

Their son was Narasimha, who astonished <strong>the</strong> world when, on hear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that a Kadamba army was at Bankapura be<strong>in</strong>g raised for assault, he crushed<br />

that force and won all its spoil, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g glory to his fa<strong>the</strong>r. (His fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

praises, say<strong>in</strong>g that) <strong>in</strong> him Nala, Nabhaga, Ambarfsha, Pnthu, Hanschandra,<br />

Chandragupta, Rama, Arjuna, Puru, Sagara, Dushyanta, <strong>the</strong> most celebrated<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, had all united <strong>in</strong>to one <strong>in</strong> this Kali age. Most wonderful,<br />

<strong>in</strong> his time <strong>the</strong>re was no m<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g of castes (varnasankaram) <strong>in</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

He acquired <strong>the</strong> praise bestowed on all <strong>the</strong> great men of old mentioned <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Bharata and Ramdyana. The k<strong>in</strong>gs he subdued <strong>in</strong> battle, which was it<br />

<strong>the</strong>y desired to give? was it tax, or customs-duty; spoils, or gifts; revenue,<br />

or forced labour? He is also styled bappana gandha-vdranam (his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

lusty elephant). His senior queen was Chagale (her praises).<br />

When (with usual titles and various o<strong>the</strong>r epi<strong>the</strong>ts, among which are) <strong>the</strong><br />

sandal to <strong>the</strong> goblet breasts of a bevy of 384 well-born women; a conjunction<br />

of Kalasena, Gaula-Deva, Virab<strong>in</strong>, Gaduncha, Pancharaattiga, Bhima, Somila,<br />

Kunnula, Boppula, Talaprahan and o<strong>the</strong>r heroes; a submar<strong>in</strong>e fire to <strong>the</strong><br />

ocean <strong>the</strong> Tuluva army; an elephant to <strong>the</strong> lotus garden <strong>the</strong> Pandya-kula; —<br />

Hoysala Narasimha-Deva, putt<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> evil and uphold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> good, was<br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> land bounded by Hima and Se'tu, and rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong><br />

peace and wisdom: —<br />

A dweller at his lotus feet, like a son to k<strong>in</strong>g Narasimha, was Kusa-<br />

Chattam, born to Siri and Barmma. His ruler be<strong>in</strong>g Narasiriiha-Deva, his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r Bammayya, his elder bro<strong>the</strong>r Bittiyanna, his mo<strong>the</strong>r sri-Devi, his elder<br />

sister Chandawe, —who <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world was of purer descent than Chatta?<br />

In steadfastness he surpassed Bhngu, Nakapa, Betala, and Sudraka (His<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r praises.) His wife was Mahadevi, (her praises). Praises of <strong>the</strong> temple<br />

and tank that he caused to be built.<br />

(With numerous epi<strong>the</strong>ts) Chattayya erected for <strong>the</strong> god Cha!tesvara a<br />

temple named Bhuvana-bhushaua, and sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> god (on <strong>the</strong> date<br />

The expressions used for <strong>the</strong> treatment of enemies are motttly pans upon <strong>the</strong> names.
