Praise of Sambhu Usual account of <strong>the</strong> rise of <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas down to<br />

Vishnuvarddhana. The Tulu country, Chakragotta, Talavana-pura, Uchchangi,<br />

Kolala, <strong>the</strong> terrible Hadiya-ghatta, Bayal-nad, <strong>the</strong> Nilachala hill-fort, Rayantyapun,<br />

Tereyur, .<strong>the</strong> Gondavadi-sthala — <strong>the</strong>se he took with a frown.<br />

(On <strong>the</strong> date specified) wheti Vishnuvarddhana-Hoysala-Deva was <strong>in</strong> D6rasamudra,<br />

rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> world — Maras<strong>in</strong>gha-Nayaka and o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

(named) made a grant for <strong>the</strong> god Nagesvara of certa<strong>in</strong> land (specified) given<br />

<strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Praise of Sambhu. May JanneSvara grant to Janna his dosires<br />

Usual descent of <strong>the</strong> Yadu-kula. Among those Yadu k<strong>in</strong>gs, a k<strong>in</strong>g named<br />

Sala, hunt<strong>in</strong>g along <strong>the</strong> slopes of <strong>the</strong> Sahya mounta<strong>in</strong>s, was astonished to see<br />

a haro pursu<strong>in</strong>g a tiger. While com<strong>in</strong>g along say<strong>in</strong>g this is heroic soil, a holy<br />

nshi, fear<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> tiger was com<strong>in</strong>g to kill him, called out adam pay Sala<br />

(hit it, Sala), on which that valiant one, before it could step a span (gen)<br />

forward, slew it with his dagger (gen). The great muni <strong>the</strong>reupon rejoic<strong>in</strong>g<br />

granted him <strong>the</strong> boon of this tiger as a victorious crest, and this exclamation<br />

as a victorious name. Thenceforward <strong>the</strong> Yadu-vamsa was known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Poysala-vamsa, and that place became Sasakapura (<strong>the</strong> town of <strong>the</strong> hare).<br />

There to V<strong>in</strong>ayaditya-Poysala was born a son Ereyanga, who had three<br />

sons - Ballala, Vishnu and Udayaditya Mahesa his god, <strong>the</strong> goddess of victory<br />

his wife, his subjects his territory, his allies those related to him by marriage,<br />

his fame which resembled trie milk <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cocoa-nut his treasury, — thus<br />

was k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala praised <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> world (Then follow numerous verses,<br />

many of which have occurred <strong>in</strong> previous <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong>, <strong>in</strong> praise of Vishnu.)<br />

He captured Talakad, pursued after <strong>the</strong> army of <strong>the</strong> Tigulas, and became <strong>the</strong><br />

fiist to <strong>the</strong> Ganga k<strong>in</strong>gdom. On Pandya flourish<strong>in</strong>g his sword, Hoysalesa cut<br />

him down with his own sword, and left only half a man to look on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Tigula's army. The Tuju country, Chakragotta, Tajavana-pura, Uchchangi,<br />

Kolala, <strong>the</strong> seven Male, Vallur, Kanchi, Kongu, <strong>the</strong> dreadful Hadiya-ghatta,<br />

Bayal-nad, <strong>the</strong> NIlachala hill-fort, Rayarayapura, Tereyur, KoyatUr, <strong>the</strong><br />

Gondavadi-sthala,— <strong>the</strong>se he took with a frown. His wife was Lakshma-Devi,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y had a son Narasimha (48 l<strong>in</strong>es here are defaced).<br />

Jannamayya-heggade received from Narasimha-Hoysala-Deva and gave (for<br />

<strong>the</strong> god Jaunesvara) certa<strong>in</strong> land at Belavadi (specified), measured with <strong>the</strong>
