when <strong>the</strong> conquest of <strong>the</strong> Pandya k<strong>in</strong>g's seven-fold k<strong>in</strong>gdom was completed<br />

(stddhmditdu) <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala-Deva took <strong>the</strong>nce <strong>the</strong> title Sanivara-siddhi<br />

When (with usual titles) Hoysala vira-Ballala-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence<br />

of Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g a k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom:—<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g brought Male-nad, Tulu-nad, <strong>the</strong> beautiful Chola-mandala, and<br />

territory up to <strong>the</strong> Perddore as <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn boundary, <strong>in</strong>to subjection to <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu, — Boppa-dandadhipa, by <strong>the</strong> might of his arms with which he slew<br />

those who attacked him <strong>in</strong> battle bad acquired <strong>the</strong> name of Drdha-ghaiatta<br />

(a gr<strong>in</strong>dstone to traitors). The great m<strong>in</strong>ister, senior dandanayaka, Drdhagharatta<br />

Boppa-Deva, giv<strong>in</strong>g to Kondah <strong>in</strong> Asandi-nad <strong>the</strong> name of Drohagharatta-chaturvvedimangala<br />

after himself, <strong>in</strong> conformity with his name of<br />

Bhuvana-viravatara (<strong>in</strong>carnation of <strong>the</strong> world's heroism), had granted it,<br />

free of all taxes, for <strong>the</strong> support of fifty-two persons<br />

And all <strong>the</strong> Brahmans of that great agrahara, with <strong>the</strong> world-famoub<br />

and learned great man of Kondali, Bhuteya-Nayaka, and his famous son<br />

Mara, (like a) sou to k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala,— be<strong>in</strong>g present, —<strong>the</strong>y prayed <strong>the</strong> great<br />

lord Adi-Gavunda,— son of Kala-Gavunda's younger bro<strong>the</strong>r Honna-Gavunda<br />

and of Jakka-Gavundi— that he would construct to <strong>the</strong> north of <strong>the</strong>ir village<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jakkave tank, <strong>the</strong> Ke<strong>in</strong>bana tank, and this village (? lhrehalli),— and<br />

gave him sante (? an agreement, or else, <strong>the</strong> dues of a fair to be established<br />

<strong>the</strong>re) And that ayya, with his younger bro<strong>the</strong>rs (two named), and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sons (four named) cut down <strong>the</strong> forest, built a virg<strong>in</strong> tank, and established<br />

<strong>the</strong> village Verses <strong>in</strong> praise of Adi-Gavunda, his wife Naga-Gavundi, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir sons (four named)<br />

And <strong>in</strong> front of that village he erected a temple and sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> god<br />

Adi-Mallikarjuna, named after himself, — to provide for <strong>the</strong> daily woiship and<br />

Chaitra purification of that god, and repairs of <strong>the</strong> temple, made grants of<br />

land (specified) and one oil-mill, (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> feet<br />

of Narasnhha-sakti. Benedictions and imprecations. Fur<strong>the</strong>r verses <strong>in</strong><br />

praise of Adi-Gavunda, stat<strong>in</strong>g that he daily gave milk to young children and<br />

food to <strong>the</strong> hungry, as well as <strong>in</strong> times of fam<strong>in</strong>e; that he built tanks,<br />

established places for giv<strong>in</strong>g dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g-water, and planted groves. His wife<br />

Naga-Gavundi joyfully gave food with her own hands to all visitors (or guests),<br />

even to <strong>the</strong> number of a thousand. His eldest son Macha-Gavunda was<br />

famed for his good qualities.<br />

This work of merit was perpetuated and engraved by Baboja's sons, Ketoja<br />

and Basavoja.<br />
