Praise of Sambhu. Usual account (<strong>in</strong> verse) of <strong>the</strong> rise and genealogy of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hoysaias down to Ballala, who, on Pandya submitt<strong>in</strong>g to his protection,<br />

took pity on him and restored his k<strong>in</strong>gdom to him, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g fame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

three worlds<br />

When (with usual titles, also) Bappa's (or? his fa<strong>the</strong>r's) lusty elephant, <strong>the</strong><br />

pratapa-chakravartti vira-Ballala-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> royal city Ddrasamudra,<br />

rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> earth r—<br />

A dweller at his lotus-feet, — was Sivanayya-perggade (his praises) May<br />

<strong>the</strong> god Sivalirigesvara grant to Sivanayya's sons, friends and relations <strong>the</strong><br />

happy state as long as sun and moon endure To describe his descent: — A<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r Sivanatha had a son Ketayya, whose mo<strong>the</strong>r was Maravve. His wife<br />

was Gaiidavve, and <strong>the</strong>ir sons were Masana, Ketanna and sivanatha-perggade.<br />

Sivaiiayya became celebrated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign of vira-Ballala-Deva, and erected<br />

a Siva temple <strong>in</strong> Sivanayanahalli which he had established at <strong>the</strong> side of<br />

Kondah Sival<strong>in</strong>ga be<strong>in</strong>g his family god, <strong>the</strong> generous Yadava emperor Vira-<br />

Ballala his master,—was Sivanayya an ord<strong>in</strong>ary man like o<strong>the</strong>rs? A jewel<br />

m<strong>in</strong>or to <strong>the</strong> face of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of Ke'tala-Devi, a renowned master of <strong>the</strong><br />

robes to Ballala, an abode of good qualities, was Sivanavya.<br />

(On <strong>the</strong> date specified) at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> sun's eclipse, all <strong>the</strong> Brahmans of<br />

Kondale-agrahara, known as <strong>the</strong> DrObagharatta-chaturvvSdimangalam, made<br />

over land valued at 15 pana for <strong>the</strong> god Sival<strong>in</strong>gesvara which Sivanayyaperggade<br />

(had set up).<br />

Praise of Sambhu and of Mahesvara Om. Obeisance to Siva<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Poysala-varasa arose V<strong>in</strong>ayaditya, whose son was Ereyanga, whoso<br />

son was Vishnu. The whole of Male became his possession, and not only that<br />

one, — Talakadu, Koyatur, Kongu, Nangali, Kanc.hi-puri, Gangavadi, <strong>the</strong><br />

celebrated Uchchaiigi, Ballare, Belvala-nad, Rachanur, Muduganftr, Vallur,—<br />

<strong>the</strong>se he took by <strong>the</strong> might of his arm.<br />

To Vishnuvarddhana and to Lakshma-Devi was born Narasnnha, whose<br />

wife was Echala-Devi, and <strong>the</strong>ir son was Ballala-Deva. Though Chola lay<br />

siege to it for twelve years, was it captured? Tho report came that he<br />

had abandoned it,—when, mount<strong>in</strong>g on it but one cubit was sufficient to<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g that Uchchangi <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> possession of this mighty one {ball-dl), as if<br />

taken <strong>in</strong> sport, - thus did <strong>the</strong> heavenly choristers praise <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala, who<br />

<strong>the</strong>nce acquired <strong>the</strong> name Giridurgga-malla. As it was a Saturday (Sanivara)
