that overcome Han, Hara and Vidhi. — What is this? — A bow (dharmma).<br />

What is this? —The bow-str<strong>in</strong>g, like a l<strong>in</strong>e of bees. — What are you here for? —<br />

In order to fight. — He sh<strong>in</strong>es with unnumbered bow-str<strong>in</strong>gs (o<strong>the</strong>rwise, virtues),<br />

ten k<strong>in</strong>ds of bows (o<strong>the</strong>rwise, merits), and endless arRows (o<strong>the</strong>rwise, arguments),—<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore do service to <strong>the</strong> lotus-feet of Balendu-yogi. Who, like<br />

a sun to <strong>the</strong> lotuses <strong>the</strong> bow<strong>in</strong>g Bhavyas (or Ja<strong>in</strong>s), gave <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> Anupieksha,<br />

a science which goes beyond <strong>the</strong> refutations of logic Able <strong>in</strong><br />

confut<strong>in</strong>g at sight by illustrations and proofs <strong>the</strong> premises of Akshapada<br />

(<strong>the</strong> rishi Gautama), was Balendu-muni.<br />

May it <strong>in</strong>crease, <strong>the</strong> .T<strong>in</strong>a sasana. The pancha-parameshtis are our refuge.<br />

Praise of <strong>the</strong> J<strong>in</strong>a-sasana.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> golden mounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sri-saiigha, is <strong>the</strong> tree of plenty <strong>the</strong> Dosiyagana,<br />

whose branches are <strong>the</strong> Pustaka-gachchha, <strong>the</strong> Kundakundanvaya its<br />

root, and <strong>the</strong> Ingalesvara-bah its twigs. Descended <strong>in</strong> that celebrated l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

was Kulabhushana-9aiddhf<strong>in</strong>tika, whose disciple was Nimba-Deva-samanta, <strong>the</strong><br />

founder of a great J<strong>in</strong>a temple. His guru for penance was Maghanandi-saiddhautika-chakravartti.<br />

Obeisance to Gandhavimukta, whose disciple was Subhanandi-saiddhatita.<br />

His disciple was Charukirtti-pandita-deva, whoso disciple Samudayada-Mighanandi-bhattaiaka<br />

do I reverence He had two disciples, — Nemichandia-bhatturaka-deva<br />

and Abhayachandra-saiddhanti. Of those two, to describe <strong>the</strong> greatness<br />

of Abhayachandra-SKldhanta-chakra' — with <strong>the</strong> Pramdna-doayi, which were<br />

like <strong>the</strong> tw<strong>in</strong> rivers <strong>the</strong> Ganga and S<strong>in</strong>dhu issu<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> Himavat mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

J<strong>in</strong>endra, he expanded prosody, logic, vocabulary, grammar, philosophy and<br />

rhetoric, and with <strong>the</strong> thunderbolt of his own learn<strong>in</strong>g split <strong>the</strong> sky-touchmg<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s of evil creeds, — this Abhayendu-yatipa, siddhanta-chakradhipa<br />

Those two be<strong>in</strong>g respectively his diksha-guru and sruta-guru, <strong>the</strong> celebrated<br />

Balachandra-bratisa do I reverence. His disciple was Abhayach.<strong>in</strong>dra,<br />

Balachandra's son. In <strong>the</strong> night (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), know<strong>in</strong>g it was his<br />

time for <strong>the</strong> tomb, forsak<strong>in</strong>g all food, purify<strong>in</strong>g his body, without fear so<br />

that all <strong>the</strong> world applauded, tak<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> paryyankdsana (or couch), as if<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g "I will certa<strong>in</strong>ly show my brightness <strong>in</strong> heaven 1 ', Abhayachandra, <strong>the</strong><br />

great saiddhantika, reached <strong>the</strong> abode of <strong>the</strong> gods. The citizens of Dorasamudra<br />

raised a high monument for him and undertook <strong>the</strong> promotion of his fame<br />

and merit.
