Vishnu-Deva. First tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to his arras <strong>the</strong> wealth of <strong>the</strong> Poysala k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

which was his <strong>in</strong>heritance, as his glory and power <strong>in</strong>creased, he brought all<br />

<strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> compass under his control, and captur<strong>in</strong>g Talakad, became <strong>the</strong> first to <strong>the</strong> Ganga ki<br />

When (with usual titles) Tnbhuvanamalla, <strong>the</strong> capturer of Talakadu, <strong>the</strong><br />

strong-armed Vishnuvarddhana-Hoyaala-Deva, protect<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> might of his<br />

arms all <strong>the</strong> lands bounded east by <strong>the</strong> lower ghat of Narigah, south by Kongu,<br />

Cheram and Anamale, west by <strong>the</strong> Barakanur ghat, north by Savimalo,— was<br />

<strong>in</strong> Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom.—<br />

Dist<strong>in</strong>guished for yama (and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r usual ascetic virtues) was isanasakti-pandita-deva.<br />

Celebrated was his matha, and while he lived, famous <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world were <strong>the</strong> Kala<br />

was isanasakti-bratlndram. Greatly lov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> woman (or his wife) Vant, and<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g upon penance as his wealth, he acquired an established fame <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

three worlds. His daughter's son, by descent and dikshe (or consecration)<br />

a Vanikanta (or Brahma), was Devendra-pandita. Devendra be<strong>in</strong>g his fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and Vf<strong>in</strong>i his mo<strong>the</strong>r, of widespread fame was Kalyanasakti-pandita<br />

Be it well Bees at <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of <strong>the</strong> great Manikya-Bhatta and o<strong>the</strong>rs'<br />

<strong>the</strong> fifty-one Sarvvajnas (or omniscients), born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> race of Nittiri-vira;<br />

of exceed<strong>in</strong>g courage; great donors of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e gems; devoted to gifts, works<br />

of merit and requital of benefits; as if obtamers of a boon from Varanagala-<br />

(?) Ganesya-deva who had uprooted daily rites, vidyddharas (or possessors of<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g); hav<strong>in</strong>g obta<strong>in</strong>ed a boon from <strong>the</strong> god Mallikarjuna? like Sudraka,<br />

skilled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> sword, like Kaunteya (Arjuna) who fought and slew<br />

Talatalukas, cages of adamant to refugees; <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g adorned with many good<br />

qualities, Dharrama-Rayas; <strong>in</strong> truth Radheyas (Karnas); <strong>in</strong> purity Gangeyas<br />

(Bhishuias); oceans of <strong>the</strong> quality of milk; <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g away, Vidyadharas;<br />

valiant <strong>in</strong> war; famed for <strong>the</strong> fierce strength of <strong>the</strong>ir long arms; obtamers of<br />

a boon from <strong>the</strong> goddess Sarada of Kasmir; <strong>the</strong> joy of <strong>the</strong> Sahavasis; emigrants<br />

from Ahichhatra; forms of merit; free from <strong>the</strong> eighteen faults; skilled<br />

<strong>in</strong> curs<strong>in</strong>g and friendship; issu<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> lotus face <strong>the</strong> seaports and cities<br />

as far as <strong>the</strong> four oceans, celebrated countries of enemies and lands of<br />

friends; upholders of <strong>the</strong> Nana-Desi (caste); royal swans among <strong>the</strong> lotuses<br />

<strong>the</strong> feet at <strong>the</strong> court of Tribhuvanamalla, capturer of Talakadu Gangavadi<br />

and Nonambavadi, <strong>the</strong> strong armed Vira-Ganga Vishnuvarddhana-Hoysala-<br />

Deva; bees at <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of <strong>the</strong> god Manikesvara; dist<strong>in</strong>guished by <strong>the</strong>se<br />

and all o<strong>the</strong>r titles; —<strong>the</strong> jeweller citizens young and old of <strong>the</strong> three capitals<br />

<strong>the</strong> great city Dorasamudra, Boluhdr and Vishnusaraudra,—may <strong>the</strong>y be permanently<br />

victorious,
