that he and no o<strong>the</strong>rs were equal to Garuda, <strong>the</strong> images of himself and of<br />

Garuda wore equally engraved <strong>the</strong>reon. No one before has set up such a<br />

vira-sdsana as k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala's chief m<strong>in</strong>ister Kuvara-Lakshma.<br />

His warriors, his beloved wife and himself hav<strong>in</strong>g with him surrendered<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir whole life to <strong>the</strong>ir ruler, what a hero was Kuvara-Lakshma. Whose<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d would not ga<strong>in</strong> surpris<strong>in</strong>g valour, what m<strong>in</strong>d of a friend would not cause<br />

<strong>the</strong> hair on <strong>the</strong> body to stand up with pleasure, what m<strong>in</strong>d of an enemy would<br />

not bo filled with fear, —<strong>in</strong> reflect<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> achievements of Kuvara-Lakshma?<br />

A champion over servants who fail <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir word <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stress of war, he did<br />

not prove false to what he bad undertaken, <strong>the</strong> ternfier of his enemies, Kuvara-<br />

Lakshma: do o<strong>the</strong>rs who renounce <strong>the</strong>ir given word fulfil <strong>the</strong>ir vows like him?<br />

While thus all <strong>the</strong> world was prais<strong>in</strong>g him as <strong>the</strong> founder of <strong>the</strong> greatness<br />

and <strong>in</strong>crease of k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala and <strong>the</strong> cause of his prosperity, —<strong>the</strong> dandisa<br />

Lakshma, toge<strong>the</strong>r with his wife, mounted up on <strong>the</strong> splendid stone pillar,<br />

covered with <strong>the</strong> poetical vlra-sasana, proclaim<strong>in</strong>g his devotion to his master.<br />

And on <strong>the</strong> pillar <strong>the</strong>y became united with Lakshml and with Garuda (<strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>scription ends thus, <strong>in</strong> an unfimsfied verse).<br />

When (with usual titles) Hoysana-Narasimha-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of<br />

DGrasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and wisdom: — A dweller at his<br />

lotus feet, — (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), Narasimba-Deva <strong>in</strong> Bijjana's alarm hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sent for <strong>the</strong> chief man to guard his elephant — Jasapala, leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

front of <strong>the</strong> battle, —so that <strong>the</strong> chiefs who were with Macheya wore pleased,<br />

stationed his elephant beh<strong>in</strong>d and caus<strong>in</strong>g it to strike, destroyed Bijjana's<br />

army, seized his horse alive and mak<strong>in</strong>g it over, aga<strong>in</strong> went <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> fight<br />

and atta<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> world of gods<br />

To describe his descent: —to Jasa-Nayaka and his wife Ballubayi was born<br />

Ekkava; to whom and to Ketamalla-Nayaka was born Dasa-Deva (Verses <strong>in</strong><br />

his praise.)<br />

Dasapala-Sahani's wife, <strong>the</strong> sahaniti Santavve, set up this stone.<br />

Praise of Sambhu.<br />

There was (omitt<strong>in</strong>g laudations) <strong>the</strong> great k<strong>in</strong>g V<strong>in</strong>ayaditya, whose senior<br />

queen was Keleyabarasi. Their son was Eyeyanga, whose wife was Echala-<br />

Devi. Their sons were Vallala, Bitti-Deva and Udayaditya. The eldest of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, Balla|a-Deva, a bee at <strong>the</strong> lotus feet of Hara (siva), caused all k<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />

bow at his (Siva's) feet and was devoted to Isvara-
