<strong>the</strong> government of <strong>the</strong>ir k<strong>in</strong>gdoms, accord<strong>in</strong>gly as <strong>the</strong>y turned <strong>the</strong> back <strong>in</strong> war,<br />

died, or escapiug his arrows became his servants:— should not k<strong>in</strong>gs be like<br />

this? Powerful as Nriga, Nala, Nahusha, Yudhishthira, Sagara, Bhagtratha,<br />

Dilipa, Purukutsa, Ayu, Gaganachara, Bharata, Rama and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, was he<br />

not <strong>the</strong> celebrated k<strong>in</strong>g vtra-Ballala ? What k<strong>in</strong>gs were <strong>the</strong>re that could withstand<br />

vtra-Ballala? When <strong>the</strong> tiger on his flag shook, <strong>the</strong>y shook with fear <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds, and fled <strong>in</strong> terror like a herd of deer; <strong>the</strong> stoutest champions,<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g, we know his might <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle-field ya 1 <strong>in</strong> which ? Vikkeya<br />

was, Hanugat <strong>in</strong> which Kovana was, <strong>the</strong> celebrated Lokkigundi <strong>in</strong> which<br />

Pokkile-Saivunas were firmly established, <strong>the</strong> great Pandya's hill considered<br />

impossible to capture,—<strong>the</strong>se, like letters written on water, <strong>the</strong>w<strong>in</strong>dofPoysala's<br />

march blew away, did <strong>the</strong>y not? The Yadu k<strong>in</strong>g's fierce anger broke, burnt or<br />

reduced to powder, as if with <strong>the</strong> thunderbolt, fire or heat (respectively), <strong>the</strong><br />

hill, forest and water fortresses. (Ano<strong>the</strong>r verse <strong>in</strong> his praise)<br />

His m<strong>in</strong>ister (with praises) was Kuvara-Lakshma. As if <strong>the</strong> (k<strong>in</strong>g's) palace<br />

were his cradle, (<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's) bounty <strong>the</strong> oil for bis mouth ,) , his nurses <strong>the</strong><br />

members of <strong>the</strong> (k<strong>in</strong>g's) female apartments, — thus did k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala cherish<br />

Kuvara-Lakshma-dandadhiSa as a son. Guru and deity alike was his ruler;<br />

both for this world and <strong>the</strong> next no o<strong>the</strong>r god had ho,—Kuvara-Lakshma-dandadhisa.<br />

(Ano<strong>the</strong>r verso <strong>in</strong> his praise.) His wife was Suggala-Devi. (Her<br />

praises.)<br />

Between servant and k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re was no difference; <strong>the</strong> glory and marks<br />

of royalty were equal <strong>in</strong> both; and <strong>the</strong>y both toge<strong>the</strong>r protected <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>in</strong><br />

great prosperity—<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g vira-Ballala and <strong>the</strong> general Kuvara-Lakshma.<br />

Thus one <strong>in</strong> celebrity and praise, <strong>the</strong> fame of both be<strong>in</strong>g spread abroad <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world; his wealth and his life Kuvara-Lakshma devoted for <strong>the</strong> gifts<br />

and <strong>the</strong> victory of vira-Ballala-Deva; and conquered <strong>the</strong> world for him as<br />

far as <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn ocean, bestow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spoil without st<strong>in</strong>t on <strong>the</strong> learned<br />

(His far<strong>the</strong>r praises )<br />

The word uttered by Kuvara-Lakkaya was one s<strong>in</strong>gle word, true and firm<br />

as letters engraved on stone; not like <strong>the</strong> speech of o<strong>the</strong>is, resembl<strong>in</strong>g letters<br />

written <strong>in</strong> water Of <strong>the</strong> sixty-four branches of learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re was not one<br />

of which he was ignorant: of only two th<strong>in</strong>gs was he ignorant—how to say no<br />

to supplicants, and how to suffer defeat. He gave his word to k<strong>in</strong>g Ballala<br />

that he would keep him free from fear. Not like m<strong>in</strong>isters who, biud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a todar on <strong>the</strong> leg as a decoration, guard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>the</strong>y obta<strong>in</strong> as if fear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to lose it, tak<strong>in</strong>g good care of <strong>the</strong>ir persons, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time of trouble to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

master accept service under ano<strong>the</strong>r family,—he rema<strong>in</strong>ed faithful to k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

l)<br />

It is uncerta<strong>in</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> words translated as names of persons hare been correctly so<br />

rendered.<br />

It is said to be customary to moisten <strong>the</strong> mouths of <strong>in</strong>fants with a little oil.
