vira-Narasimha-Deva was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital Dorasamudra, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

empire of <strong>the</strong> whole world: —A dweller at his lotus feet, Ramachandra-<br />

Jatti's son Birada-Jatti, (on <strong>the</strong> date specified), established a shr<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />

goddess Nimbaja <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple of <strong>the</strong> god Hoysalesvara, and made a grant<br />

(specified) for it.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> fortunate Yadu-kula was a k<strong>in</strong>g named Sala, by whom Sasakapura<br />

was founded, <strong>the</strong> chief deity of which was <strong>the</strong> goddess beloved of Vasanta.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> time when that great k<strong>in</strong>g was worshipp<strong>in</strong>g that goddess Vasantika<br />

of Sasakapura, a terrible tiger leaped forth. The great J<strong>in</strong>a muni, who was<br />

<strong>the</strong>re for <strong>the</strong> purpose of giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struction and foretell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> future, called<br />

out "strike, Sala (poy Sala), this tiger with (my) cane (bettava seleytm)",<br />

from which that k<strong>in</strong>g Sala obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> name Poysala, and that tiger became<br />

<strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g device on his flag. In that Poysala l<strong>in</strong>e was (omitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

laudations) Vmayaditya His son, <strong>the</strong> husband of <strong>the</strong> Earth and of Echala-<br />

Devi, was Ereyanga-Deva. He had three sons, like <strong>the</strong> three jewels, Ballala-<br />

Deva, Bitti-Deva and Udayaditya-Deva. Of <strong>the</strong>m Vishnuvarddhana became<br />

celebrated for his wide-spread fame. He had a son Narasimha, whoso son<br />

was Ballala. '<br />

The hostile k<strong>in</strong>gs, that abode of valour, vira-Ballala-Deva, consigned<br />

(respectively) to dreadful forests, to <strong>the</strong> laps of <strong>the</strong> celestial nymphs, or to
