Kaveri, — srimat Trlbhuvana-Malla, <strong>the</strong> strong-armed Vira-Ganga Vishnuvarddhana-Poysala-Deva<br />

was protect<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> power of his arm a dom<strong>in</strong>ion<br />

bounded east by <strong>the</strong> lower ghat of Nangah, south by Kongu, Cheram and<br />

Anamale, west by <strong>the</strong> Barakanur and o<strong>the</strong>r ghats of Konkana, north by<br />

Savimale: —<br />

And when, united with <strong>the</strong> sharer <strong>in</strong> a thousand delights, (omitt<strong>in</strong>g mere<br />

laudations) a Kamale born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> milk-ocean of Bahpura,* receiver of a boon<br />

from <strong>the</strong> god Dharmmesvara, hav<strong>in</strong>g erected <strong>the</strong> Ramesvara temple of Isapura,<br />

a jewelled lamp <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> house of <strong>the</strong> Bharatagaraa (or science of music), <strong>the</strong><br />

cluster of <strong>the</strong> nails of whose feet were reverenced by crowds of beautiful<br />

girls with long hang<strong>in</strong>g tresses, a head-jewel <strong>in</strong> all manner of danc<strong>in</strong>g, a<br />

Sarasvati <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, a rutt<strong>in</strong>g elephant to co-wives, — <strong>the</strong> senior queen, <strong>the</strong><br />

crowned consort Santala-Devi, — Vishnuvarddhana-Poysala-Deva was <strong>in</strong> his<br />

residence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great city of Velapura, rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and<br />

wisdom: —he set up with faith <strong>the</strong> god Vijaya-Narayana, called Chenna<br />

(described with an immense number of epi<strong>the</strong>ts), and (on <strong>the</strong> date specified),<br />

to provide for <strong>the</strong> daily ceremonies, <strong>the</strong> decorations, and <strong>the</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>gs at <strong>the</strong><br />

three times, to <strong>the</strong> gods Vijaya-Narayana, Chenna-Kesava and Lakshmi<br />

Narayana, and for <strong>the</strong> livelihood of <strong>the</strong> Srivaishnava Brahmans, of <strong>the</strong> dauc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

girls, <strong>the</strong> putters on of <strong>the</strong> vestments, <strong>the</strong> learned men, <strong>the</strong> garland-makers,<br />

<strong>the</strong> lighters of lamps and all <strong>the</strong> attendants, he made grants of villages (afi<br />

specified). Whatever surplus <strong>in</strong>come may accrue, to be devoted to offer<strong>in</strong>gs to<br />

<strong>the</strong> faithful and to temple repairs. Thus was it ordered by <strong>the</strong> eleventh<br />

<strong>in</strong>carnation, Vishnuvarddhana Hoysala-Deva. (Imprecations)<br />

When, by order of (with usual titles) Hoysala-Ballala-DSva, <strong>the</strong> great<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister Heggade-Buchimayya was govern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seven nads north from<br />

Anche, (on <strong>the</strong> date specified) Ballala-Deva remitted for <strong>the</strong> god Vijaya-Narayana,<br />

all <strong>the</strong> petty taxes for tribute, granary, barter, (?) shows, ... , marriage<br />

gifts, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> twelve villages and <strong>the</strong>ir hamlets belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> god Vijaya-<br />

Narayana <strong>in</strong> that nad.<br />

Also for <strong>the</strong> performance of prayers, sacrifices, daily service and recitations<br />

of <strong>the</strong> velas, vira-Ballala-Deva made grants of villages (specified) to <strong>the</strong><br />

120 bhattar of Kesavapura, <strong>the</strong> 21 of Subhapura, and <strong>the</strong> 30 Srtvaishnava<br />

tern pis priests of this place.
