regents of <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> compass <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir respective stations were trembl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and hid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves, while Ch61a, Lala and o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs runn<strong>in</strong>g away,<br />

shut <strong>the</strong>mselves up trembl<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>ir wives <strong>in</strong> hill-forts and were lament<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Vishnu put to flight <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs along <strong>the</strong> seashore and plundered all <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

wealth. Rayarayapura was burnt, and see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> smoke of <strong>the</strong> flames spread<strong>in</strong>g<br />

towards Kanchi, <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ds of Ch61a, Chcra and Pandya were filled with<br />

fear,- thus did <strong>the</strong> flame of Vishnu's valour grow brighter- And by his unequalled<br />

ronown he made famous <strong>the</strong> glory and name of both families, his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's and his mo<strong>the</strong>r's, and of <strong>the</strong> ruler who had protected him To describe<br />

his descent — In <strong>the</strong> yuga created by <strong>the</strong> blessed Adi Brahma <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

Kasyapa Prajapati; from whom <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pure Kasyapa-gotra arose many great<br />

ones; after whom, an abode of praise and renown, was (omitt<strong>in</strong>g laudations)<br />

Udayaditya, whose wife was Santiyakka. Their son was Ch<strong>in</strong>na-Raja-dandadhisa,<br />

who bore <strong>the</strong> burden of k<strong>in</strong>g Ereyanga's territory His wife was<br />

Chandale, and <strong>the</strong>ir son was Udayana, a full moon <strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> waters of <strong>the</strong><br />

ocean <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> Yadava k<strong>in</strong>gs After bear<strong>in</strong>g several daughters,<br />

she bore ano<strong>the</strong>r son, Vishnu, who daily <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> size and glory like <strong>the</strong><br />

new moon.<br />

On his grow<strong>in</strong>g up with <strong>in</strong>dications of all good qualities, as a reward to<br />

<strong>the</strong> household of an hereditary m<strong>in</strong>ister and a meritorious family, Kanchigonda<br />

Vikrama-Ganga Vishnuvarddhana-Deva, treat<strong>in</strong>g him like a son, himself had<br />

his up army aria performed with great festivities And after seven or eight<br />

years of age, when he had become proficient <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> science of arms,<br />

obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for him a virg<strong>in</strong>-jewel, <strong>the</strong> daughter of his own chief m<strong>in</strong>ister,<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished by all auspicious marks and well-born, that Vishnuvarddhana-<br />

Deva himself lifted up a golden halala and pour<strong>in</strong>g water on his hand, gave<br />

away <strong>the</strong> virg<strong>in</strong>, thus provid<strong>in</strong>g him with a marriage of unimag<strong>in</strong>ed happ<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

And at <strong>the</strong> age of ten or eleven, hav<strong>in</strong>g become as sharp as kutsa grass <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>telligence, and perfect <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four tests of character, Vishnuvarddhana-<br />

Deva not<strong>in</strong>g this and prais<strong>in</strong>g him, with his own hand <strong>in</strong>vested lum with <strong>the</strong><br />

titlo of trmhA-pradianda-dandandtha, with double confidence, and giv<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

all authority, he became <strong>the</strong> sarvvddhikdri and benefactor of all <strong>the</strong> people.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g succeeded <strong>in</strong> an unequalled, victorious expedition, he obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

leputation of be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cible, and all <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world lov<strong>in</strong>g him for<br />

<strong>the</strong> brightness of his fame, were rem<strong>in</strong>ded by his brave exploits of <strong>the</strong> great<br />

men of old time, - Immadi-dandanayaka.<br />

When his youth had matured, hav<strong>in</strong>g ga<strong>in</strong>ed experience of all public<br />

affairs, and made many gifts <strong>in</strong> great holy places, he erected this Vishnuvarddhana-<br />

J<strong>in</strong>alaya <strong>in</strong> Dorasamudra, <strong>the</strong> capital of <strong>the</strong> Yadava k<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

Loyalty, dis<strong>in</strong>terestedness, cont<strong>in</strong>ence And courage.
