Kahnga and Simhala k<strong>in</strong>gs, Kanchipura resound<strong>in</strong>g with his orders as with<br />

<strong>the</strong> sharp sounds of drums (named), <strong>the</strong> wives of hostile k<strong>in</strong>gs employed <strong>in</strong> bis<br />

house as female servants, squeez<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his hand <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Madhurapura,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g destroyed Jananathapura l ) by his general, — Kanchi-gonda ') Vikrama-<br />

Uariga vira-Vishnuvarddhana-Deva, protect<strong>in</strong>g under his sole umbrella <strong>the</strong><br />

Gangavadi N<strong>in</strong>ety-six Thousand, <strong>the</strong> Nonambavadi Thirty-two Thousand and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Banavase Twelve Thousand, was rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>in</strong> peace and<br />

wisdom: —<br />

Beared up from <strong>the</strong> root <strong>the</strong> feet of that emperor of <strong>the</strong> Kshatra-kula,<br />

and nourished by <strong>the</strong> stream of <strong>the</strong> nectar of his favour, was Vishnu-dandadhipa<br />

(compared to <strong>the</strong> tree of plenty) (His praises.)<br />

When (with numerous epi<strong>the</strong>ts, among which are), a sun to <strong>the</strong> Kasyapagotra;<br />

<strong>the</strong> beloved son of Ch<strong>in</strong>nama, possessed of all learn<strong>in</strong>g acquired at<br />

<strong>the</strong> feet of <strong>the</strong> emperor of logicians, Sripala-tramdya-deva, who was named<br />

Vadfbhasirhha, <strong>in</strong>vested by Kanchi-gonda Vikrama-Ganga Vishnuvarddhana-<br />

D§va with <strong>the</strong> rank of mahd-prachanda-dandandtha; hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> half a month<br />

completed an expedition of victory to <strong>the</strong> south, pleas<strong>in</strong>g his k<strong>in</strong>g to horripilation<br />

with all <strong>the</strong> wealth and elephants he bad captured <strong>in</strong> attack<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

uproot<strong>in</strong>g groups of brave k<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> shore of <strong>the</strong> ocean; <strong>the</strong> flames of<br />

Rayar«\yapura, which was consumed by his valour, dry<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> hearts of <strong>the</strong><br />

Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava k<strong>in</strong>gs; strew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> battle-field with <strong>the</strong><br />

bra<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> elephants m <strong>the</strong> Konga army; erect<strong>in</strong>g pillars of victoiy to his<br />

master <strong>in</strong> his victorious expedition to <strong>the</strong> south, adorned by <strong>the</strong> Sahya<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s; a right-hand to Vishnuvarddhana-Deva; —with <strong>the</strong>se and all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

titles, <strong>the</strong> great m<strong>in</strong>ister, Immadi-dandauayaka Bittiyanna, be<strong>in</strong>g both<br />

sarvvadhikari and benefactor of all people, was <strong>in</strong> peace: —<br />

quickly tribute from Kongu". — On <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g thus order<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> half a paksha<br />

he put to flight Chengiri, burnt his city, plundered his territory, took an<br />

astonish<strong>in</strong>g amount of tribute, and brought it <strong>in</strong> with a troop of lusty<br />

elephants, — Vishnu-dandadh<strong>in</strong>atha. "This boy will take Kongu, will he not?<br />

He will br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> troop of elephants, will he not? with his golden smile"—<br />

While even <strong>the</strong> powerful were thus speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> alarm, he fought <strong>the</strong> hostile<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs, put <strong>the</strong>m to flight, subdued Konga so that <strong>the</strong> earth raised an outcry,<br />

and by <strong>the</strong> power of his arm brought <strong>the</strong> troop of elephants to his ruler, and<br />
