lov<strong>in</strong>g her husband k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu, Santala-Devi assumed <strong>the</strong> crown. (Her<br />

On his desert<strong>in</strong>g his queens, forsak<strong>in</strong>g bis k<strong>in</strong>gdom, and dy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

country near Cheng<strong>in</strong>, he took possession of <strong>the</strong> company of Naras<strong>in</strong>ga's<br />

wives, put down Angara, trampled on S<strong>in</strong>galika, and turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Ganges, slew <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn countries, — <strong>the</strong> son of k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Eyeganga. Hav<strong>in</strong>g succeeded <strong>in</strong> this expedition to <strong>the</strong> north, his elephant<br />

trampled down <strong>the</strong> army of <strong>the</strong> Pandya k<strong>in</strong>g, ashamed of so easy a victory,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g defeated Ch61a and Gaula <strong>in</strong> terrible great wars. And pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Pandya, he seized Nolambavadi, captur<strong>in</strong>g Uchchaiigi <strong>in</strong> a moment and toss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it up, as if play<strong>in</strong>g at ball, — Kanchigonda-Vikrama-Ganga. After that,<br />

march<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Telunga country, he captured Indra toge<strong>the</strong>r with his<br />

elephants, <strong>the</strong> wealth ga<strong>in</strong>ed by victory and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>herited wealth of his<br />

family. After that, destroy<strong>in</strong>g root and branch Masana, who was a torment to<br />

<strong>the</strong> country, he wrote down <strong>the</strong> Banavase Twelve Thousand m his kadita (or<br />

account book)- When <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu was play<strong>in</strong>g, as if at tirikal l) with<br />

<strong>the</strong> great Sahya mounta<strong>in</strong>s, Nilagiri, and . of what account are <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs? and what wonder is it that he took <strong>the</strong> famous Panungal <strong>in</strong> half a<br />

second with a simple flip of his f<strong>in</strong>ger . . kill<strong>in</strong>g only with a glance<br />

. natha who was tak<strong>in</strong>g Kisukal, he pursued after Jayake§i and ga<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

possession of <strong>the</strong> Palasige Twelve Thousand and <strong>the</strong> . . Five Hundred.<br />

Turn<strong>in</strong>g and turn<strong>in</strong>g he entered hill-forts, go<strong>in</strong>g far<strong>the</strong>r and far<strong>the</strong>r away as<br />

far as <strong>the</strong> ocean . . . . , attack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong>, he sought out<br />

<strong>the</strong> bravest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth and slew <strong>the</strong>m — Vishnuvarddhana-Deva. Whatever<br />

countries aie considered famous, whatever hill forts are specially described,<br />

whatever k<strong>in</strong>gs are worthy of be<strong>in</strong>g reckoned, he subdued, and added to his<br />

fame throughout <strong>the</strong> world as far as <strong>the</strong> limits of <strong>the</strong> four oceans—<strong>the</strong> glory<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Kshatriya race, <strong>the</strong> brave k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu.<br />

When that great Kshatriya, entitled to <strong>the</strong> five great drums, mahamandaleSvara<br />

(with numerous o<strong>the</strong>r titles and epi<strong>the</strong>ts, among which are) a Bhairava<br />

of <strong>the</strong> last deluge to <strong>the</strong> Chola race, a royal lion to <strong>the</strong> elephant Chera, a sub-<br />
