famous k<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> banks of <strong>the</strong> Ganges to Lanka (Ceylon), and from <strong>the</strong><br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g sun.- In Ramesvara and o<strong>the</strong>r chief sacred places, he<br />

made <strong>the</strong> sixteen and o<strong>the</strong>r great gifts, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> sastras, surrounded<br />

with learned men, and so <strong>in</strong>creased his fame. (Omitt<strong>in</strong>g laudations:) From<br />

Tippaji and Nagala-devi were born to him Nrisimha and Krishna-Raya.<br />

The heroic Narasimha, seated on <strong>the</strong> jewel-throne <strong>in</strong> Vijayanagara, by his<br />

fame and policy putt<strong>in</strong>g to shame Nriga, Nala, Nahusha and o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> earth, ruled <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom from Setu to Suraeru and from <strong>the</strong> eastern to<br />

<strong>the</strong> western mounta<strong>in</strong>s draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hearts of all to himself. All manner of<br />

gifts did he make <strong>in</strong> Kanakasadas (Chidambram), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temple of Virupaksha<br />

(at Hampi), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town of Kalahasti (North Arcot District), <strong>in</strong> Venkatadn<br />

(Tirupati), <strong>in</strong> Kanchi (Conjeveram), <strong>in</strong> Srisaila (Karnul District), <strong>in</strong> Sonasaila<br />

(Tiruvarmamalai), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great Hanhara (Chitaldroog District), <strong>in</strong> Ahobala<br />

(Karnul District), <strong>in</strong> Sangama, <strong>in</strong> Sriraiiga (near Tnch<strong>in</strong>opoly), <strong>in</strong> Kumbhaghdna<br />

(Tanjore District), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mahanandi-tirtha, <strong>in</strong> Nivritti, <strong>in</strong> Gdkarna (North-<br />

Kanara District), <strong>in</strong> Ramasetu (Madura District), and many o<strong>the</strong>r sacred<br />

places, —namely, every variety of <strong>the</strong> great gifts, such as <strong>the</strong> golden egg, <strong>the</strong><br />

golden wheel, <strong>the</strong> golden pot, <strong>the</strong> golden cow, <strong>the</strong> seven golden seas, <strong>the</strong><br />

wish<strong>in</strong>g tree, <strong>the</strong> golden cow of plenty, golden earth, gold horse-chariot, a<br />

man's weight <strong>in</strong> gold, a thousand cows, a golden horse, <strong>the</strong> golden-wombed<br />

(Brahma), gold elephant-chariot, and <strong>the</strong> five ploughs. Hav<strong>in</strong>g ruled a perfect<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom unopposed, this k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> earth, famed for his virtues, went to<br />

svarga, as if to rule <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> sky.<br />

Mightier even than him, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Krishna-Raya took <strong>the</strong> earth upon his<br />

| shoulders as if a jewejjed spatulette. (For laudatory stanzas which follow, see<br />

Md. 55). In Kanchl, Srisaila, Sonachala, Kanakasabha, Venkatadri and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

places, so as to add greatly to his glory, did he aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong> bestow <strong>the</strong><br />

great gifts described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sastras, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> grants associated with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. Pumsher of warlike k<strong>in</strong>gs, able <strong>in</strong> protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world which lies <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> arms of Sesha, pumsher of k<strong>in</strong>gs who break <strong>the</strong>ir word, giver of joy to his<br />

dependents, fierce <strong>in</strong> war, styled rajadhiraja and raja-paramesvara, sultan<br />

over <strong>the</strong> H<strong>in</strong>du k<strong>in</strong>gs, destroyer of <strong>the</strong> tigers, <strong>the</strong> evil, a male bherunda,<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished by <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r titles; served by Anga, Vanga, Kahnga,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs, with such words as "Look on us, great k<strong>in</strong>g! Victory!<br />

Long life!"—his generosity praised by <strong>the</strong> wise, this k<strong>in</strong>g of k<strong>in</strong>gs Krishna-Raya,<br />

seated on <strong>the</strong> jewel-throne <strong>in</strong> Vijayanagara, daily surpass<strong>in</strong>g Nriga and all<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, shone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power of good fortune and <strong>the</strong> fullness of fame from <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern to <strong>the</strong> western mounta<strong>in</strong>s, and from <strong>the</strong> extremity of Hemachala to Setu.<br />

(On <strong>the</strong> date specified), at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> moon's eclipse, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sim<br />

temple at Sriparvata, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence of Mallikarjuna, to Braumans of various<br />

sskbss, gotras and sutras, renowned and versed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vedas, he made a grant
