Of mak<strong>in</strong>g a gift or ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (ano<strong>the</strong>r's gift), <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (ano<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

gift) is superior to giv<strong>in</strong>g: by giv<strong>in</strong>g, svarga is atta<strong>in</strong>ed; by ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r's gift), <strong>the</strong> feet of isvara—Impos<strong>in</strong>g a tax on what was free from tax<br />

is said to be like slaughter<strong>in</strong>g a crore of cows; free<strong>in</strong>g from tax what is taxed<br />

confers greatness <strong>in</strong> paradise.—<br />

The Sasana was composed by Naiijappa-upadhya, son of Nanjappa-upadhya<br />

of Hasana, of <strong>the</strong>. . .gotra and Yajus-Sakha, and engraved by Kallayya, son<br />

of Lakhana of Hasana, of <strong>the</strong> Kasyapa-gstra. May it be unobstructed.<br />

Ajjeya-Nayaka set up <strong>the</strong> god Bhimesvara <strong>in</strong> Gavanahalh, belong<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Buvanahalh, and all <strong>the</strong> Brahmans of <strong>the</strong> immemorial agrahara Buvanahalh<br />

made a grant of lands (specified) to provide for <strong>the</strong> offer<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> cows <strong>in</strong> Arasiyakere were harried, Bamma-Gonda, son of Buva-<br />

Gavunda, recovered <strong>the</strong> cows, killed many (enemies) and went to svarga<br />

When Bomma went to <strong>the</strong> world of gods, <strong>the</strong> celestial nymphs bore him away,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> celestial drums sounded; but not rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re, he sped forward<br />

and entered Siva's assembly.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> churn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> milk ocean by <strong>the</strong> gods arose a bright one<br />

(Chandra), disperser of darkness. His son, dist<strong>in</strong>guished for great penance,<br />

was Budha. From him sprang Pururava; from him, Ayu; from Ayu, Nahusha,<br />

froro him, Yayati, great <strong>in</strong> war; from whom, by Devayani, was born <strong>the</strong><br />

famous Turvasu, <strong>the</strong> equal of Vasu.<br />

In that race arose Timma-bhupati, as renowned among <strong>the</strong> Tuluva k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

as Krishna was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yadu l<strong>in</strong>e, whose wife was Pevaki. From him<br />

sprang Isvara, whose wife was Bukkama. From him was born Natasa, like<br />

Kama, <strong>the</strong> joy of Devaki. Quickly damm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Kaveri when <strong>in</strong> full<br />

flood, he crossed over and seiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy alive, took possession of his<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom and of <strong>the</strong> city Srlrangapattana, and erected a pillar of victory.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g conquered Chera, Chola, and Pandya, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> lord of<br />

Madhura, whose honour was his ornament, <strong>the</strong> fierce Turushka, <strong>the</strong><br />

Gajapati k<strong>in</strong>g, and o<strong>the</strong>rs, — he imposed his commands on <strong>the</strong> heads of all <strong>the</strong>
