<strong>the</strong> tears of <strong>the</strong> wives of his enemies, caused by <strong>the</strong>ir separation from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

husbands bereft through Asoka.<br />

This is followed by ano<strong>the</strong>r, as follows, which seems ironical: —<br />

What wonder is <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three worlds, Narada-muni V Vishnu, listen, 1<br />

will tell. In svarga Indra's assembly is without danc<strong>in</strong>g, fire has lost its<br />

appetite, Kubera is guard<strong>in</strong>g his own treasure, Phani (also a name of Patanjah)<br />

is expound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bhashya,—<strong>in</strong> wisdom, generosity, good deeds and wars,<br />

Asoka is <strong>the</strong> only k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

HN. 19 gives <strong>the</strong>se k<strong>in</strong>gs' names as Narasimhavarmma and Krishnavar<strong>in</strong>ma.<br />

On. 167 gives an account of Basava-dikshita, who had been guru to both <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs Isvara and Narasa, and performer of <strong>the</strong> vajapeya and o<strong>the</strong>r great<br />

sacrifices for both Narasimha and Krishna-Raja.<br />

With Cn. 187 we come to Achyuta-Raya. It is Bl. 197 <strong>in</strong> his reign that<br />

gives us <strong>the</strong> name of Aiigadi, which I have identified with <strong>the</strong> Hoysala birthplace<br />

Sose,vur. Hn. 7 gives us <strong>the</strong> same important <strong>in</strong>formation as was obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ng. 68 (Vol. IV) regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> succession after Achyuta-Raja. On <strong>the</strong><br />

death of <strong>the</strong> latter, his son Venkata-Raya came to <strong>the</strong> throne, but soon died.<br />

Then it was that Sadasiva-Raya, <strong>the</strong> son of Ranga and Timmamba, was ano<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> throne by Rama-Raja, his sister's husband, and <strong>the</strong> chief m<strong>in</strong>isters l)<br />

He brought <strong>in</strong>to subjection <strong>the</strong> whole land from Setu to Himadri, and ruled<br />

for a long time. The Kambhoja, Bhoja, Kal<strong>in</strong>ga, Karahata and o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

acted as servants <strong>in</strong> his female apartments The <strong>in</strong>scription concludes with<br />

<strong>the</strong> genealogy of Rama-Raja. He was descended from Nanda of <strong>the</strong> Lunar<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e, through k<strong>in</strong>g Chalikka and Bijjalendra. Then came Somi-Deva, who<br />

captured seven hill-forts. His grandson, master of Araviti-pura, was <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

P<strong>in</strong>nama, whose son was <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g Araviti-Bukka, whose wife was Ballambika.<br />

Their son was Rama-Raja, who by his wife Lakkambika, had a son Sri-Ranga-<br />

Raja. His wife was Tirumalambika, and <strong>the</strong>ir son was Rama-Raja, whose<br />

younger bro<strong>the</strong>rs were Tirumala-Raja and Venkatiidri-Raja.<br />

The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Vijayanagara <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> belong to Sri-Ranga-Raya, (Bl. 1,<br />

dated 1578), Venkatapati-Raya (Bl. 146, dated 1607), and five of Sri-Ranga-<br />

Raya II (B1.80, dated 1659, 196, 81, 122, and Hn.40, dated 1663) In <strong>the</strong><br />

first he is said to be <strong>the</strong> sou of Gopala-Raja and grandson of Araviti Rama<br />

Raja-Ranga-Raja. In <strong>the</strong> second he is said to be <strong>the</strong> son of Gopala-Raja, but<br />

grandson of Narasapa-Raja and great-grandson of Araviti Rama-Raja-Verika-<br />
