tried to escape when he was placed at <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> army. Hav<strong>in</strong>g conquered<br />

<strong>the</strong> Keralas, Taulavas, Andhras and ? Kutakas, he seized <strong>the</strong>ir wealth and<br />

gave it to his k<strong>in</strong>g. Dragg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> elephant-like Saipa, Pa<strong>the</strong>ya and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

proud Turushkas along by <strong>the</strong>ir hair <strong>in</strong> battle, he tied <strong>the</strong>m up <strong>in</strong> his stables<br />

like monkeys; and besides <strong>the</strong>m, seized by <strong>the</strong> throat <strong>the</strong> two great tigers<br />

known as Jyeshtha and Kanishtha. He set up pillars of victory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior<br />

of all <strong>the</strong> 56 countries (named), and restored <strong>the</strong> grants which <strong>the</strong> Hoysana<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnuvarddhana-Bitti-Deva had made for this his family-god. He also<br />

rebuilt with seven storeys <strong>the</strong> gopura over <strong>the</strong> entrance, which Ganga-Salar,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turushka of Kallubarage, had come and burnt, and set up a golden kalasa<br />

at its summit.<br />

Hn. 133 br<strong>in</strong>gs us to Deva-Raya, who, it says, was crowned on <strong>the</strong> 7th of<br />

November 1406 In Hn. 18 he is called Bukka (II). Hn. 16 is a record of<br />

Mallikarjuna, and Bl. 136, of V<strong>in</strong>ipaksha<br />

In Hn. 6 we have <strong>the</strong> genealogy of <strong>the</strong> second dynasty. Its orig<strong>in</strong> is traced<br />

to Tiuima, renowned among <strong>the</strong> Tuluva k<strong>in</strong>gs. From hira sprang Isvara,<br />

whose wife was Bukka<strong>in</strong>a, and <strong>the</strong>ir son was Narasa. Quickly damm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Kaven when <strong>in</strong> full flood, he crossed over and seized <strong>the</strong> enemy alive, took<br />

possession of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom and of <strong>the</strong> city Srirangapattana, and erected a pillar<br />

of victory. Hav<strong>in</strong>g conquered Chera, Chdla and Pandya, toge<strong>the</strong>r* with <strong>the</strong><br />

lord of Madhura, <strong>the</strong> fierce Turushka, <strong>the</strong> Gajapati k<strong>in</strong>g and o<strong>the</strong>rs, — he<br />

imposed his commands upon all <strong>the</strong> famous k<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> Ganges to Lanka,<br />

and from <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g sun. In Raniesvara and o<strong>the</strong>r chief sacred<br />

places he made <strong>the</strong> sixteen and o<strong>the</strong>r great gifts.<br />

From Tippaji and Nagaia-Devi were born to him Nrisimha and Knshna-<br />

Raya. These two ruled successively, and a list is given of <strong>the</strong> great gifts <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had made and of <strong>the</strong> places <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were bestowed. The <strong>in</strong>scription,<br />

like many o<strong>the</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong> same high-flown style, was composed by Sabhapati.<br />

Hn. 13 <strong>in</strong>forms us that Krishna-Raya marched aga<strong>in</strong>st Gajapati <strong>in</strong> 1516 and<br />

set up a pillar of victory on <strong>the</strong> bank of <strong>the</strong> Krishnaveni. The <strong>in</strong>scription<br />

records <strong>the</strong> grant of an agrahara by a chief named Dhananjaya, but concludes<br />

with an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary and unusual verse, whose -only connection is that it<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> name Dhananjaya. But my friend <strong>the</strong> late Pandit Rajagdpalacharya<br />

of Chik-Ballapur <strong>in</strong>formed rae that <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al of <strong>the</strong> verse is different,<br />

and is given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bhoja-prabandha as follows, among some relat<strong>in</strong>g to Asoka: —<br />

kutra tvam chalitosi Narada vada kshonyam kim asty adbhutam<br />

Sambho'bhun marutam ruraasya vijaya-prasthana-dhuli-bharaih<br />

nitASoka-vipanna-natha-virahodhhutaih punah purnataih<br />
