INTRODUCTION. XXVH<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>in</strong> On. 206, we f<strong>in</strong>d Narasimha <strong>in</strong>. .rtivurunengaged <strong>in</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with Ramanatha. Also <strong>in</strong> Bl. 74 we are po<strong>in</strong>tedly <strong>in</strong>formed that <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his own Hoysala country, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> proper capital Ddrasa<strong>in</strong>udra,<br />

which his fa<strong>the</strong>r had stored with <strong>the</strong> riches of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom. On. 269 far<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>forms us that on Narasiraha's com<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> throne, hav<strong>in</strong>g no fear of his<br />

arm, <strong>the</strong> great Sevuna k<strong>in</strong>g Mahadeva-Rane came and made war on him, but<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g unable to -endure, left his cavalry force and fled <strong>in</strong> terror <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

night, say<strong>in</strong>g 'Flight is best (paldyanam kubalam). Narasimba's chief m<strong>in</strong>ister<br />

was Peruroale, who <strong>in</strong> sight of both armies had <strong>the</strong> javamke (curta<strong>in</strong> or tent)<br />

of Ratnapala carried away, and with his sword offered up his head to <strong>the</strong><br />

Lakshnii of victory, whence he received <strong>the</strong> title of Javanike Narayana. The<br />

grant <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>scription was made for <strong>the</strong> A<strong>in</strong>dra-parvva (festival). In Bl. 98<br />

we have a shr<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> goddess Nimbaja set up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hoysalesvara temple<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1261, and a grant made for it <strong>in</strong> 1270 (Bl. 92). From Ag. 21 it appears<br />

that <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g made <strong>the</strong> grant of a village <strong>in</strong> Koiigu-nad for so distant a god<br />

as Visvesvara of Benares. Bl. 150 <strong>in</strong>forms us that he had a son named<br />

Malh-Deva. Bl. 164 and 166 conta<strong>in</strong> records of a formidable <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>in</strong><br />

1276, which was repelled. In <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Sevuna k<strong>in</strong>g Rama-Deva, his<br />

general Saluva-Tikkama, assisted by Jeyi-Deva and Harapala, and streng<strong>the</strong>ned<br />

by <strong>the</strong> army of Irungola (<strong>the</strong> chief of Nidugal <strong>in</strong> Pavagada taluq), suddenly<br />

came and encamped at Belavadi, which is to <strong>the</strong> north of Halebidu, say<strong>in</strong>g "I<br />

will take Dorasamudra <strong>in</strong> only one m<strong>in</strong>uto", and laid siege to <strong>the</strong> fort. But<br />

under <strong>the</strong> leadership of Chikka-Keta, who was apparently a son of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and with <strong>the</strong> heroic example of a chief named Anka (perhaps his son), a<br />

tremendous battle took place on <strong>the</strong> 25th of April 1276, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a great<br />

victory over <strong>the</strong> enemy, who were driven back <strong>in</strong> confusion beyond Dummi,<br />

<strong>the</strong> hill on <strong>the</strong> Sbimoga and Chitaldroog frontier. The badge (of honour) on<br />

Saluva's face (or forehead) was damaged, and he fled say<strong>in</strong>g "I am disgusted",<br />

while Haripala was stricken with fear and Jeyi-Deva beat his mouth. From<br />

Ak. 149 it appears that Ramanatha made an attack on Siiigeya-dannayaka<br />

<strong>in</strong> Mannana-koyil and killed him. Two years later we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Bl. 187 Gajapati<br />

and Ramanatha united, fall<strong>in</strong>g upon Narasimha <strong>in</strong> a battle at Soleiir, when<br />

some compromise seems to have been effected. Two years later aga<strong>in</strong> (Hn. 47)<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was ano<strong>the</strong>r fight with Ramanatha. And f<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong> 1290 (Cn. 232)<br />

Ramanatha raised an army and came to fight. In Bl. 166 we are <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

that Chikka-Keteya <strong>in</strong>curred <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's anger and was arrested, while his<br />

V super<strong>in</strong>tendent of m<strong>in</strong>es (dkarcwnandalika) was dismissed from his treasury,<br />

and Ankeya (see above)r who was master of <strong>the</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g of all <strong>the</strong> army, was<br />

also attacked. Bl. 90 speaks of a grant <strong>in</strong> 1281 for <strong>the</strong> okah spr<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

god Hoysandgvara. In Ak. 151 we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g march<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1285 aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong><br />

Nidugal fort, and by destroy<strong>in</strong>g Bageyakere, break<strong>in</strong>g its pride. Ak. 8 to 14<br />
