promoter of <strong>the</strong> Lakulagama-samaya. Hn. 139 of 1200, shows, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

residence at Vijayasamudra. This <strong>in</strong> Cn. 172 is called <strong>the</strong> rajadhdni or royal<br />

city, and is said to be on <strong>the</strong> bank of <strong>the</strong> Tungabhadra. It is evidently <strong>the</strong><br />

same as <strong>the</strong> Vijayapur of Cn. 244, which is said to be Hallavur. He was<br />

resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same place <strong>in</strong> 1205, 1209, 1210 and 1211 Cn 181, Ak. 40,<br />

Cn. 172, 244, Ak. 137). I f<strong>in</strong>d a 'Hulloor' <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> maps, on <strong>the</strong> Tungabhadra<br />

<strong>in</strong> Raui-Bennur taluq, and this may be <strong>the</strong> place. Bl. 72 of about 1200, states<br />

that <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g had latticed w<strong>in</strong>aows of stone and o<strong>the</strong>r accessories made for <strong>the</strong><br />

Belur temple. Cn. 161 of about <strong>the</strong> same date, records <strong>the</strong> death of Sripalayfig<strong>in</strong>dra.<br />

Cn. 206 br<strong>in</strong>gs to our acqua<strong>in</strong>tance <strong>the</strong> senior queen Chdlamabadevi,<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g whom we have a touch<strong>in</strong>g story. She was rul<strong>in</strong>g Kembala,<br />

when it was reported to her that some wicked persons at Be>ur had used hard<br />

words about her. She <strong>the</strong>reupon ordered it to be attacked and Keta-malla<br />

was killed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> assault. Feel<strong>in</strong>g compunction for this, she sent two of her<br />

chief men to <strong>the</strong> family, say<strong>in</strong>g,—"We have caused pa<strong>in</strong> to our children; go<br />

and encourage <strong>the</strong>m with our words, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence of <strong>the</strong> sixty families<br />

of Kembala console Keta-malla's son and make to him <strong>the</strong> grant of a rent-free<br />

estate." Cn. 265 conta<strong>in</strong>s a curious account of an architect or builder named<br />

Stotakachfiri, and his son who was a priest. Ak. 40 of 1209, speaks of Umadevi's<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom and says that her m<strong>in</strong>ister was Kumara-Panditayya, and Cn. 172<br />

of <strong>the</strong> same date, says that he was <strong>the</strong> son of Ballaja and Uma-devi. But<br />

Cn. 243 of 1210, states that Narasimha was <strong>the</strong> Yuvaraja, and praises <strong>the</strong><br />

beauty and virtues of his sister S6vala-d6vi. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to numerous <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong><br />

Narasimha's mo<strong>the</strong>r was Padmala-Devi (see Bl. 116). Cn. 244 gives a long<br />

account of <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister Kesava or Kesiraja, and states that his ancestors were<br />

all m<strong>in</strong>isters to <strong>the</strong> Hoysala k<strong>in</strong>gs, — Rama, to V<strong>in</strong>ayaditya; his son Sridhara,<br />

to Ereyanga; his sons Mallideva, Damaraja and Kesavaraja, to Vishnuvarddhana;<br />

Malla's sons Madhava, Bettarasa and Dama, to Narasimha; among<br />

Betturaja's sons was Kesiraja. Hn. 31 shows <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1211 moved to<br />

Raya. .pattana. Bl. 136 <strong>in</strong> 1217 speaks of <strong>the</strong> queen Ketala-Devi and her<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom. But Bl. 116 shows that <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g also had a junior queen called<br />

Abh<strong>in</strong>ava-Ketala-devi. Hn. 61 shows <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g encamped at Nidugal-durga 1)<br />

<strong>in</strong> Sire-nad.<strong>in</strong> 1218. An account is given of a great officer of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's who<br />

was a raja by right <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kasmira country. Cn. 211a of probably <strong>the</strong> same<br />

year, places <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g at Nallur-koppa. Ak. 77 of 1220, conta<strong>in</strong>s an account<br />

of how RScharasa, <strong>the</strong> em<strong>in</strong>ent councillor of <strong>the</strong> Kalachurya-kula, placed<br />

himself under Ballala's protection, and hear<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> steadfastness of <strong>the</strong><br />

thousand families of Ja<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Arasiyakere, he set up <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> Sabasrakutachaityalaya<br />

and endowed it, with <strong>the</strong> sanction of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g. Arasiyakere is<br />

styled <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ayyavale. Its Brahmans were learned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vedas, <strong>the</strong><br />
