compares Vishnuvarddhana's conquest of Talakadu to mak<strong>in</strong>g a clear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

forest, fenc<strong>in</strong>g it round by pil<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> bodies of hostile k<strong>in</strong>gs, burn<strong>in</strong>g it,<br />

plough<strong>in</strong>g it with <strong>the</strong> hoofs of his horsemen, form<strong>in</strong>g seed-beds watered with<br />

<strong>the</strong> stream of his valour, and sow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with his last<strong>in</strong>g fame. His nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

boundary is given as <strong>the</strong> Heddore and Savimale, so <strong>the</strong> latter, which has not<br />

been identified, was probably near <strong>the</strong> Krishna1 ) . He now made a grant to<br />

his queen Santala-Devi, (<strong>the</strong> daughter of Maras<strong>in</strong>ga and Machikabbe), of <strong>the</strong><br />

village of Santigrama (now called Grama, east of Hassan), and gave <strong>the</strong> villages<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to it to 220 Brahraans. Cn. 149, dated 1125, says that <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was rul<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> lands as far as to <strong>the</strong> shore of <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn ocean, and was<br />

<strong>in</strong> Talavana-pura. A humorous description is given of <strong>the</strong> effect of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn exploits. Adiyama (it says) ran as if <strong>in</strong> a race, and learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

pace Nrisimhavarmma ran, while Cheng<strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g multiplied upon that pace,<br />

<strong>the</strong> proud Kongas learnt it from Chengiri, and see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> celebrated Kongas,<br />

Pandya also ran, —who would not run before k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu? He had a Ja<strong>in</strong>a<br />

temple made for Sripala-traividya-deva, and presented him with <strong>the</strong> village of<br />

Salya as an endowment. Sripala's spiritual descent is traced with mention of<br />

Jama teachers from Mahavira onwards. He is called <strong>the</strong> shat-tarkka-Shanmukha<br />

and <strong>in</strong>herited <strong>the</strong> titles vddibhasimha, vadi-koldhala and tarkkikachakravartti.<br />

In Kd. 69 (Vol. VI) Sripala is described as a commentator on<br />

prose and poetry, and it <strong>the</strong>re says that at <strong>the</strong> courts of <strong>the</strong> Chola and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>gs he had defeated many and put <strong>the</strong>m down. In Ak. 41, dated 1130,<br />

and Ak. 46, dated 1132, wa have a chief appo<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> government of<br />

Kalikatti, who is described as a worshipper of <strong>the</strong> feet of Nolamba-Deva.<br />

(Compare On. 129 and Kd. 140, Vol. VI). Bl. 124, dated 1133, is an<br />

important and <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>scription giv<strong>in</strong>g a well composed account of <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g's conquests. His destruction of all his enemies was like <strong>the</strong> break<strong>in</strong>g up<br />

of <strong>the</strong> great deep, <strong>the</strong> coursers of <strong>the</strong> sun be<strong>in</strong>g borne away <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> deluge and<br />

all <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of <strong>the</strong> compass filled with <strong>the</strong> sounds of <strong>the</strong>ir neigh<strong>in</strong>g. In covert<br />

language he is credited with <strong>the</strong> possession of Anga, Kuntala, Kanchi and<br />

Madhura ,j . A description follows of his m<strong>in</strong>ister Ganga-Raja of whom we<br />

have so many notices <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sravana Belgola <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong>. By rebuild<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to Nepala a whip for bis tack. Bl. 193 says that while still a youth, like a keen soldier, he broke<br />

and trampled on <strong>the</strong> Maleya-maharaja and roasted Jagaddva, he penetrated <strong>in</strong>to Talakad, destroyed<br />

Kongu, and made a breach of Nangali, subdued S&dali, reduced Budali to ashes, smote Pariyur,<br />

uprooted Cherama, took possession of Kanchi-pura, put to flight Pandya, went clean through<br />

Uchehangi, and made <strong>the</strong> mud stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>da run out, he burnt Bollitige, as if,burn<strong>in</strong>g black<br />

bricks, reduoed Annigere to little brioks, ground down Ball a re, set fire to Rajavur, broke <strong>the</strong> leg<br />

of Hanangsl, besides crush<strong>in</strong>g Banavase, Halasige, Huligere and Beluvala.
