Manikya-Devi of <strong>the</strong> Chakrakuta throne, brought down <strong>the</strong> pride of Adiyama,<br />

overturned <strong>the</strong> tree Narasimhabrahma, split <strong>the</strong> skull of k<strong>in</strong>g Kala, destroyed<br />

<strong>the</strong> serpent Chengiri, broke down <strong>the</strong> planta<strong>in</strong> stems <strong>the</strong> spears of Irungdla,<br />

shook <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> Chengiri-Perumala, set up Patti-Perumala, made Talakadu<br />

his own, took <strong>the</strong> Kongu country, protected Nolambavadi, expanded Nilaparvvata,<br />

extended Kdlala-pura, uprooted Kdvatur, shook Teriyur, crossed<br />

over Vallur, uncha<strong>in</strong>ed Nangali-pura, pulled up <strong>the</strong> door of <strong>the</strong> Ghats, and<br />

made Kanchi-pura tremble 0 . The boundaries of his k<strong>in</strong>gdom at this time<br />

were,— east, <strong>the</strong> lower Ghat of Nangali; south, Kongu, Cheram and Anamale;<br />

west, <strong>the</strong> Barakanur and o<strong>the</strong>r Ghats of Konkana; north, Savimale. Praises<br />

follow of <strong>the</strong> queen Santala who is said to have been born <strong>in</strong> Balipura. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>scription records <strong>the</strong> consecration of <strong>the</strong> great temple at Velapura ,} or Belur<br />

where <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g was liv<strong>in</strong>g, dedicated to Vijaya-Narayana under <strong>the</strong> name of<br />

Chenna-Kesava, who is described with an immense number of epi<strong>the</strong>ts. Bl. 16<br />

repeats much of <strong>the</strong> same and says that Santala-Devi with <strong>the</strong>. approval of<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g Vishnu assumed <strong>the</strong> crown (pattamam dhariyisidal). Its date (not<br />

mentioned) may be <strong>the</strong> same or earlier, and it is not complete.<br />

Bl. 147, dated 1121, conta<strong>in</strong>s much of <strong>the</strong> same matter, but states that<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Ddrasamudra (<strong>the</strong> modern Halebid), and that<br />

Ketamalla (apparently a merchant) erected <strong>the</strong>re a siva temple named after<br />

<strong>the</strong> patron of his family Vishnuvarddhana-Poysalesvara. This stone is at<br />

Ghattadahalli, close to Halebid on <strong>the</strong> east, and might possibly refer to <strong>the</strong><br />

great Hoysalesvara temple. This question will be considered far<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

section treat<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> temple. Cn. 2606 of <strong>the</strong>-same date represents <strong>the</strong> Deva<br />

(or k<strong>in</strong>g), <strong>the</strong> patta-raabadevi Santala-Devi and <strong>the</strong> five m<strong>in</strong>isters (pancha<br />

pradhdnarum) as be<strong>in</strong>g present at <strong>the</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> grant, and we shall f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>stances <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> five m<strong>in</strong>isters (whoever <strong>the</strong>y were)<br />

form <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al court of appeal for <strong>the</strong> decision of important questions. Hn. 102,<br />

dated 1123, gives <strong>the</strong> Peddore (or Krishna river) as <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g's nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

boundary. Be<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> time on <strong>the</strong> bank of <strong>the</strong> goddess Kavert, he heard of<br />

<strong>the</strong> death at Kellavatti <strong>in</strong> Nirggunda-nad of his younger bro<strong>the</strong>r Udayaditya,<br />

and so converted <strong>the</strong> village <strong>in</strong>to a rent-free agrahara of 18 shares for <strong>the</strong><br />

Brahmans who had been dependent on him. (Hn. 173 may possibly be a<br />

was Kolar, Kovatur was Coimbatore, Teriyur was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north-east of Tumkur <strong>district</strong>, Vallur <strong>in</strong><br />

Paragada taluq or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ouddapah distriot, Nangali is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east of Kolar <strong>district</strong>, Kanohl is<br />

Conjereratn.<br />

2) This oeromony is also reoorded <strong>in</strong> Bl. 71 of <strong>the</strong> same date,—Hemalambi-tamvattarada Chaitra-<br />

Suddha-panchamti but while Bl. 68 (on stone) gives <strong>the</strong> week day as Vaddavara (Saturday), Bl 71<br />

(on copper plates) gives it as Adivara (Sunday).
