INTRODUCTION. VII<br />

Kong divas.<br />

The Kongalvas ruled a k<strong>in</strong>gdom situated pr<strong>in</strong>cipally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arkalgud taluq,<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Kaveri and Hemavati rivers 1) . Their <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> date from<br />

about 1020 to 1100. They were, we may imag<strong>in</strong>e, a branch of <strong>the</strong> Alva or<br />

Aluva k<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e of which ruled over Aluva-kheda or South Kanara<br />

from an early period. South from <strong>the</strong> Kongalvas were <strong>the</strong> Changalvas (sec<br />

Vol. IV), and we have also mention of Dattalvas (Vol. VI) and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<br />

volume of Nadalvas.<br />

The best account of <strong>the</strong> Kongalvas is conta<strong>in</strong>ed id <strong>the</strong>ir titles as given <strong>in</strong><br />

Ag. 99, though <strong>the</strong>se may only apply to that particular k<strong>in</strong>g. They are,—<br />

entitled to <strong>the</strong> five big drums, maha-mandalesvara, chief lord of <strong>the</strong> city of<br />

Oreyur (<strong>the</strong> early Chola capital near Trich<strong>in</strong>opoly), sun upon <strong>the</strong> eastern<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chola-kula with twisted top-knot, crest-jewel of <strong>the</strong> Suryya-vamsa<br />

(or Solar race). They thus claim to be <strong>in</strong> fact C'hdlas, but we know that <strong>the</strong><br />

Chojas imposed <strong>the</strong>ir names upon <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>the</strong>y conquered, while <strong>the</strong><br />

vassal k<strong>in</strong>gs whom <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> government of <strong>the</strong>m took Chola names, as for<br />

example <strong>the</strong> Changalvas. But here <strong>the</strong> Kongalvas go far<strong>the</strong>r and claim actual<br />

descent from <strong>the</strong>m. The names of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> our <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> here are,—<br />

Badiva Kongalva . . . . . . . . .<br />

Riijendra-Chola Prithuvi-mabaraja . . . . . 1022<br />

Rajendra-Chola Kongalva . . . . . . . 102G<br />

Rajendra Prithuvi-Kongajva-Deva Adataraditya . . 106G-1100<br />

Tribhuvanamalla-Chola Kongalva-Deva Adataraditya . . 1100<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> first we have no <strong>in</strong>formation except <strong>the</strong> name. In Mj. 43 and Ag. 76<br />

we have encounters between <strong>the</strong> Kongfdvas and <strong>the</strong> Hoysalas. In <strong>the</strong> former<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kongalva k<strong>in</strong>g attacked Nnpa-Kama-Poysala (<strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of Vmayaditya)<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1022, whose life was apparently saved by his general Jogayya. In <strong>the</strong><br />

latter <strong>the</strong> enemy is styled <strong>the</strong> base {munda) Poysaja, and Kongalva claims<br />

to have ga<strong>in</strong>ed a victory over him at Manni. This was <strong>in</strong> 1026. From Ag. 99<br />

and his o<strong>the</strong>r <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> it is evident that Adataraditya was a Jam. Praise<br />

is given <strong>in</strong> this to Prabhachandra-siddhanta-deva, who had <strong>the</strong> title ubJutyasutdhduta-ratndkara;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g made a chaityalaya for Gandavimuktasiddhanta-deva<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1079. The <strong>in</strong>scription was composed by <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister for peace<br />

and war, Nakularyya, who boasts of be<strong>in</strong>g able to write <strong>in</strong> four languages2) .<br />

NADALVAS.<br />

Of this family <strong>the</strong>re is only one somewhat obscure <strong>in</strong>scription (HN. 17),<br />

of <strong>the</strong> date 1141, determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> mention of <strong>the</strong> coronation festival of<br />

1) In Ha 92 (Vol. IV) <strong>the</strong> Ganga pr<strong>in</strong>ce Ej;eyappa, it is said, was governor of <strong>the</strong> Kongal-nAd<br />

Eight Thousand, which would be <strong>in</strong> about 920. This was probably <strong>the</strong> same prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> «n earlier<br />

and perhaps more extended form<br />

" Could this be <strong>the</strong> celebrated Lakula, founder of <strong>the</strong> P&iupata sect?
