INTRODUCTION. Ill<br />

stone record<strong>in</strong>g it now is. It is situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Konanur hobli of <strong>the</strong> Arkalgud<br />

taluq, to <strong>the</strong> north of <strong>the</strong> Kaveri river. We also had mention of <strong>the</strong> village<br />

of Kolanellur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Galigekere plates (Yd. 60) and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nitre stone (Gu. 79),<br />

dated respectively <strong>in</strong> about 890 and <strong>in</strong> 1009 A. D. These may be <strong>the</strong> same<br />

village. But <strong>the</strong> Kolanallur of our present <strong>in</strong>scription is said to be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Vallavi <strong>district</strong>. This I am disposed to identify with <strong>the</strong> Ballavi Seventy<br />

mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Honnali taluq of <strong>the</strong> Shimoga District. It is<br />

<strong>the</strong>re described as be<strong>in</strong>g near <strong>the</strong> Tungabhadra river and situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Banavase Twelve Thousand 1 . There is a Nallur to <strong>the</strong> south-west of <strong>the</strong><br />

Sttlekere <strong>in</strong> Channagiri taluq, and from No. 51 of that taluq it is evident that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was a circle named Kole <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> immediate neighbourhood.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r Kadamba grant (Bl. 245) of <strong>the</strong> same reign and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

characters 2) has come to light <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bennur plates, said to be handed down<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> family of <strong>the</strong> present owner 3 The contents differ <strong>in</strong> some S<strong>in</strong>gular<br />

respects from <strong>the</strong> former. They beg<strong>in</strong>, as do most of <strong>the</strong> Ganga plates, with<br />

Jitam bhagavata. The svasti is opposite <strong>the</strong> 3rd l<strong>in</strong>e. The open<strong>in</strong>g verse<br />

praises <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g for feed<strong>in</strong>g thousands of Brahmans <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way as<br />

Yudbishthira. In <strong>the</strong> body of <strong>the</strong> grant, after <strong>the</strong> usual Kadamba epi<strong>the</strong>ts, he<br />

is described as <strong>the</strong> fifth k<strong>in</strong>g (patichama-lokapdlah) of <strong>the</strong> Kadambas, <strong>the</strong><br />

dharmma-maharajah vijaya-siva-Krishnavarrmna. His grandfa<strong>the</strong>r's name is<br />

given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form Vishnudasa. The grant was made when <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g out on an expedition from Vaijayanti, <strong>in</strong> front of (<strong>the</strong> god) Mahadeva<br />

of Inguna, on Pansha-suhla-pratipadi; and consisted of <strong>the</strong> village of Palmadi<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sendraka-vishaya 4 , given to a Brahman named Bhavasvami, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with a dasabandha s) of six nivarttana. After usual imprecations, a bless<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

<strong>in</strong>voked on Dosharasivarmma 6) on account of <strong>the</strong> grant, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription<br />

ends with obeisance to Vishnu.<br />

We have to pass over several centuries to arrive at <strong>the</strong> next Kadamba<br />

<strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> <strong>in</strong> this volume, and <strong>the</strong>y are on stone. These are Hn. 38, Mj. 28,<br />

and Hn. 45, of which only <strong>the</strong> last is dated, giv<strong>in</strong>g us Saka 947 as its period<br />

(1025 A. D.). The o<strong>the</strong>rs may be somewhat earlier.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g is unfortunately effaced, but he is said to<br />

be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence of Banavase. He conferred a title or bound a crown on<br />

<strong>the</strong> grandson of his guru for some display of bravery. In <strong>the</strong> second <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

1) I do not th<strong>in</strong>k Vallavi is Bellavi <strong>in</strong> Tumkur District, as suggested by DP. Kielhorn<br />

2) The same little dots or knobs appear wherever <strong>the</strong> graver has stopped. Anusvara is represented<br />

by a short horizontal wavy stroke above <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

3) The plates are <strong>in</strong> excellent order. The r<strong>in</strong>g, closed with a lion seal, had not been out.<br />

4) This was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north-west of <strong>the</strong> Mysore ooantry.<br />

5) Dasavanda is rent-free land granted for build<strong>in</strong>g or repair<strong>in</strong>g a tank, on condition of pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

one-tenth (or a small share) of <strong>the</strong> produce.<br />

6) This om<strong>in</strong>ous name seems <strong>in</strong>tended for <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g.
