As <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r volumes, <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>scriptions</strong> are passed <strong>in</strong> review <strong>in</strong> this<br />

Introduction, as far as possible, <strong>in</strong> chronological order, under <strong>the</strong> forego<strong>in</strong>g<br />

heads, attention be<strong>in</strong>g directed to such po<strong>in</strong>ts as appear to call for special<br />

notice.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g abbreviations are made use of for <strong>the</strong> names of taluqs, <strong>in</strong><br />

order to save space: — Hn. — Hassan, Bl.— Belur, Ah.= Arsikere, Cn. = Ch&nnarayapattana;<br />

HN". = Hole-Narsipur; Ag. = Arkalgud; MJ. = Manjarabad<br />

Kadambas.<br />

The earliest record of <strong>the</strong> Kadambas <strong>in</strong> this volume is conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bannahalli plates (Bl. 121). These were discovered <strong>in</strong> about 1888 by some<br />

person when digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Kodanhalli attached to that village, which is now <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Belur taluq l) . The giant is one made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 7th year of his reign by<br />

1) The plates have been published by Dr. Krelhorn (Ep Ind., VI, 16) from impressions by Dr<br />

Fleet to whom I had lent <strong>the</strong>m. With regard to his translation, I would po<strong>in</strong>t out with all<br />

deference that gandharvva has here to be taken <strong>in</strong> its mean<strong>in</strong>g of "horse", and not as "<strong>the</strong> art of<br />

music". Vatsaraja is always cited as a standard of horsemanship. The fac-simile <strong>the</strong>re published<br />

shows a number of little r<strong>in</strong>gs or circles at <strong>the</strong> ends of <strong>the</strong> strokes <strong>in</strong> many letters, especially <strong>the</strong><br />

head strokes. But <strong>the</strong>se are merely m<strong>in</strong>ute knobs or bumps caused by <strong>the</strong> bulg<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> metal<br />

where <strong>the</strong> grav<strong>in</strong>g tool has been pushed to a stop, and are no part of <strong>the</strong> letters consciously so<br />

formed. An example of a real r<strong>in</strong>g or circle <strong>in</strong>tentionally formed ocours <strong>in</strong> Kr <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e 5, towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> left of <strong>the</strong> bottom of <strong>the</strong> letter. The o<strong>the</strong>rs are evidently <strong>in</strong>cidental and not <strong>the</strong> same The<br />

fac-Bimlle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present volume shows <strong>the</strong> characters without any manipulation.
