In 1941, the committee of the Petőfi Society turned down the co-ordinated, falsified memoirs of three amateur Petőfi researchers (Lajos Barátosi Lénárth, József Sándor and Ferenc Svigel), according to which Sándor Petőfi (Kiskörös, December 31, 1822/January 1, 1823–July 31, 1849), the poet who had been taken prisoner by the Russians after the Battle of Fehéregyháza fought on July 31, 1849, was allegedly buried in a Siberian village called Ilisunsk, a place which had never existed. In 1989, an amateur research team rehashed the legend and by necessity “relocated” the poet’s grave to the cemetery in Barguzin because of the non-existence of Ilisunsk. Granted permission to excavate, they claimed to have found the earthly remains of Petőfi, who had served as a major in the revolution, in Grave 7 of the cemetery. However, the traditional anthropological examination of the skeletal remains by Soviet and Hungarian scholars and the DNA analyses performed by the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory in Washington DC and Mark Stoneking, Professor of Biological Anthropology at the Pennsylvania State University, both indicated that the remains came from a female. The project failed as shown by these analytical results and by the lack of any confirming evidence contained in the primary historical sources. The failure was never publicly acknowledged by journalists Tibor Borzák and Ildikó Hankó, entrepreneur Ferenc Morvai, and István Kiszely, an anthropologist who had become notorious for his role as an informant of the Socialist regime. The research team, which has since broken up, has refused to return the skeletal remains for reburial despite an official request made by the local council of Barguzin. In 2010, the World Federation of Hungarians proposed that Petőfi’s remains – either the skeleton exhumed in Barguzin or the corpse to be found by future research on the Fehéregyháza battlefield – should be ceremoniously buried. The second part of the study offers an overview of the findings of the research conducted by András Dienes (1904–1962), which have since been borne out, as well as of the views of Kálmán Papp (1923–1990), an amateur researcher who provided many fresh insights which have not been fully appreciated, and the notes made by anthropology professor Aurél Török (1842–1912) based on his field research. The Appendix describes the rally demanding new DNA analyses organised by the World Federation of Hungarians in Summer 2011 and offers a review of Gábor Szűcs’s book, published in Autumn 2011, which appears to be no more than a plagiarism of Kálmán Papp’s findings.
