<strong>West</strong> <strong>Africa</strong><br />

Niger<br />

A Niger country market study was implemented dur<strong>in</strong>g July and August <strong>in</strong><br />

Niamey, Dosso, Maradi and Z<strong>in</strong>der, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g structured and semi-structured<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews with farmers, traders and other private sector stakeholders, NGOs<br />

and government bodies. Results from the study are currently be<strong>in</strong>g compiled.<br />

A questionnaire has been sent to NARS partner, INRAN, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

triangulate data from the country market case study.<br />

Senegal<br />

A diagnostic questionnaire sent to NARS partner, ISRA/CNRA, to UNIS, and<br />

to CIRAD, <strong>in</strong> order to provide a basel<strong>in</strong>e of commercial and market data <strong>in</strong><br />

support of the country market case study <strong>for</strong> Senegal. A very useful and<br />

applicable study of the Senegal groundnut sector, with extensive price<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation and analysis, was recently published as a PhD thesis by Dr James<br />

Gray of the University of Vermont, USA (Gray 2002). Communication was<br />

made with the author <strong>in</strong> order to br<strong>in</strong>g the results of the study up to date.<br />

Interviews were conducted with Dr Oumar Chiekh Ba, director of the ISRA<br />

Bureau (BAME), and Dr Ala<strong>in</strong> Mayeux of CIRAD, who has already conducted<br />

extensive market research on the European market <strong>for</strong> confectionary<br />

groundnut (ARB) of Senegalese orig<strong>in</strong>. A follow-up visit to the <strong>Groundnut</strong><br />

Bas<strong>in</strong> (dur<strong>in</strong>g the groundnut harvest) and to Dakar was made <strong>in</strong> November -<br />

December 2003.<br />

Mali<br />

A diagnostic questionnaire sent to NARS partner, IER/CRRA, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

provide a basel<strong>in</strong>e of commercial and market data <strong>in</strong> support of the country<br />

market case study <strong>for</strong> Mali. Reference materials on the Mali groundnut sector<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded a 1998 country study by the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agriculture, and a follow-up<br />

country study of the Mali groundnut sector by O Kodio of IER. This<br />

collaborative support of the market study by IER was most helpful to the<br />

purposes of the study. A follow-up visit to Mali was made <strong>in</strong> November 2003.<br />
