You may know the lyrics and the
story about «…birds do it, bees do
it, even educated fleas do it,» but
did you know that many people in
Europe once believed that birds
began to choose their mates on
February 14th? In fact Chaucer, in
his «Parliament of Fools,» wrote:
«For this was Saint Valentine‘s Day
when every fool cometh there to
choose his mate.» The 16th century
English poet Drayton, wrote
verses entitled «To his Valentine,»
and included the idea of birds’ in
love on St. Valentine‘s Day: «Each
little bird this tide, doth choose her
beloved peer, which constantly
abide, in wedlock all the year.»
Why might your Valentine’s Day
card be embossed with doves or
lovebirds instead of robins or
wrens? Because doves and lovebirds
stay in pairs throughout their
lives. This is why they have come
to represent love and loyalty on
Valentine’s Day. According to
Roman mythology, the Goddess
Venus considered doves as sacred
because of their fidelity towards
their mate. However, in the cold
month of February, where can we
see real lovebirds, doves, and any
other bird for that matter, unless
the bird feeder is full?
To find out where to really look for
birds, how to spot them and the
truth about birds, plan on visiting
the ASPO Bird Nature Center in
La Sauge, Cudrefin, for their next
exhibit, «Heavens! Where are our
Birds?» The event will highlight
bird life in Swiss forests, mountains,
agricultural areas, cities and
villages. Tips and hints will be given
on how to encourage better living
and nesting areas for endangered
birds. Young and old can take part
in the exhibit’s activities through
games, visits to the bird monitoring
stations and audio-visual presentations.
Challenge your senses while
trying to identify the different perfumes
of the forest or see how clever
you can be at bird «memory.»
ASPO has set up thematic «bird
islands,» for you to make surprising
discoveries on how birds have
adapted to their crazy people inhabited
surroundings.
«Heavens! Where are our Birds?»
opens on Saturday February 22,
2009, at Bird Life La Sauge; located
between Ins and Cudrefin, at
the Grande Cariçaie on the southeast
shore of Lake Neuchatel; one
of the most important bird and
wildlife reserves in Europe. The
Bird Life center features a 500
meter outdoor observatory path
with «hides». Guided tours of the
Fanel and Chablais reserves can be
