Giving a glimpse into his recipe for lasting success, Wahl said, “My job is to put the project together, prepare the boat and train the team, but it also involves being in optimal physical and mental condition so I can connect with the lake environment and the wind. That’s the only way I can make the right decisions. Time can run slow in the Bol d’Or, very slow sometimes, and yet everything can come down to a decision that has to be taken very quickly, which is why you have to be totally focused.” THE OTHER WINNERS Hats off to the 183 boats that managed to finish an especially slow race, starting with the M2 Swiss Medical Network and Patrimonium, which placed second and third respectively and came mightily close to a historic win. Elsewhere, the indefatigable Pascal Chatagny won for a fourth time in the Surprise class, while the equally insatiable Hungarian boat Raffica won the Bol de Vermeil for an 11 th time since 1996 to remain the undisputed king of the monohulls. Finally, special mention should go to the beautiful 6.5m mahogany Ondine. Built in 1932 and masterfully skippered by Christian Monachon, this jewel of the seas came home first in the corrected-time category. 83
